Now while I am a massive Corrie fan, I'm not like a lot of soap fans who defend their favourite no matter what. In recent times Corrie has descended into the panto route which has caused it to lose credibility, and suffer in the ratings slightly as a result. I, for one, no longer find it unmissable because of this.

They have introduced pointless characters, who while needed to make up the numbers in the factory etc. have actually had no real impact in terms of story or character development. They have also done a huge disservice to themselves by letting a particular character go.

I think Corrie have made a huge mistake in only introducing Emily's niece for a short period of time. From what I saw of her, she was a very likeable, warm and genuinely funny character who could have added a lot to the soap. I read theories somewhere that she was going to con Emily or something to that effect, but I'd really like it if she came back to stay with Emily, and wasn't a con-artist or anything of the sort, but a genuinely nice character, who would probably be the first deaf person in the soap.

Her observation in the pub with her lipreading people and the "someone will cheat on their partner tonight" line were genuine, touching and actually quite funny, and I think she would add a great deal to the soap if she returned.

Nah didn't like her, maybe they didn't keep her too long as she wouldn't have heard the directors shouting 'Cut' etc..

I'd also like to see her return as a nice person... the overall reaction to her which I saw tended to be really good.
I also liked her lipreading in the pub, and I loved her dealing with Norris.
It'd be also interesting having a more permanent deaf person in a soap. I'm interested in Deaf people as I used to work for Typetalk, and have attended courses on deaf people, and i'd like to see it more on television.

I doubt it, the actors she were filming with could have easily signalled to her that the director had said cut.. it's no big deal really

As someone who is shortly going to be working with deaf people, I think that's a terrible thing to say...

I've just started Sign Language, and will shortly be doing voluntary work in a school with deaf people, and from what i've seen most of them are completely unphased by the condition, and actually seem to have quite a dark sense of humour because of it... would like to see a soap actually tackle issues faced by them... preferable to the terrible mascot story going on at the moment.

I will no doubt have the PC brigade jumping on me now, didnt mean my comment to cause offence, its just maybe she does cause a few problems with filming.

Maybe they can give her a job on the itv2 repeats as the annoying signing distraction in the corner.

That's really cool that you'll be doing voluntary work with deaf people.. I would love to learn Sign Language myself, I learnt the alphabet a while ago and was keen to learn more but i've never gotten round to it.
When working at typetalk, we attended a course delivered by a deaf person and he too had a good sense of humour because of it, and I found the whole course to be really interesting - it gave me a good insight into the problems they face, and I also would love to see this on television, and to make other people aware. I've heard some terrible stories of the treatment deaf people have received at the hands of hearing people, and it would be a good thing to make everybody more aware.
Whereabouts are you doing your Sign Language? I am also in Liverpool

I can't think of any problems she could cause with filming, but maybe so.

And she is an actress so she would obviously want to act. And being deaf shouldn't stop her from doing that.

After all the "bastard" trouble yesterday I have no doubt about that!!

I'm sure she'd know to stop when the scene's lines run out though... unless she's a thesp and rhubarbs away until well after the camera's have stopped rolling.

Yes, I agree with you about Corrie. I think it has been a disappointment this year- you're right that it has become too panto, and they've also introduced too many pointless characters. They also haven't really had any major storyline that has captured the imagination since Killer Katy.

I absolutely loved Freda- it was great to see a character being introduced where her deafness wasn't an issue. Rather than being a deaf character, she was just a character who happened to be deaf. It didn't define who she was as a person.

I loved her humorous banter with Norris, and she had some really touching moments with Emily.

She was a fantastic character- i'd love her to return!

Doing it in the community college next to the Peter Lloyd centre... it's brilliant. Only been doing it for 5 weeks, but the teacher has THE most wicked (in the evil sense) sense of humour I have ever seen... and she didn't know she was deaf until she was 21!! Doing voluntary work over in Birkenhead where my mate's a teacher in a normal school, but they have 4 deaf kids there.

I agree that anything that makes people more aware is only a good thing. The teacher was saying that she's been called some terrible things in the past because she hasn't heard people talking to her... their defence being "she didn't look deaf, so how were they to know"

Nice one, I really should look into doing it sometime, I'd love to at least be at level 1. I've always had problems with career and studying etc but I really would stick to learning Sign Language, and maybe one day could be an interpreter.

It's ridiculous isn't it... the ignorance of some people just totally amazes me. The more i'm thinking about Freda becoming a regular character, the more I think it would be great. I'd love to see more interaction with other characters.

I'm hoping one day I could be an interpreter... it's a long long way off, but (having study troubles myself... I left uni because the course was too rigid and bored me) it doesn't feel like studying.. and actually wanting to be there is half the battle won IMO.

She also seemed to bring out the best in the other characters she worked with. Since the Richard Hillman story, Emily hadn't really had anything to do other than mind Amy for Tracy, and her scenes with Freda were actually very touching and sad to watch. More Freda I say!!!

Definitely, I could have done a lot better in school or sixth form but i'm too lazy in school as i've never found anything I really love doing. Therefore, wanting to do Sign Language I would make a lot more of an effort, and could see myself doing it... I've always wanted a job which helps other people and working at Typetalk was rather satisfying, knowing I was helping these people go about their lives, making their phone calls.

Agree about her scenes with Emily too... I think it'd be nice for the banter with Norris to carry on, but in the end them warming to each other.

I worship you madam,Corrie isn't the top dog anymore like it use to be it will be interesting to see how the new Corrie Story Consultant sees it going with all the pointless characters.

Take lastnight for example it should of been,Cold,Dark,Gripping but more to the put the acting should of had you gripped,Did it? No it was above standard.

About the downfall its bound to come more then likely around Chrismas but it may well be in the new year when the new producer finds it hard to take on so many people.

Yeah I agree... Norris' recent story with the job interviews were pretty awful to watch, and it'd be nice to see him develop a friendship with Freda.

Sorry to go off-topic again, but while I was in Uni I worked in a pretty small shop locally, that sold wheelchairs/stairlifts/mobility products... there were only about 10 of us working for this one man. I was on about 6 quid an hour, which suited me fine... then one day the fella who owned the place came in complaining that his wife had been spending £120 a roll on wallpaper, and it came as a HUGE wake-up call for me. I don't want to spend my life earning not very much, working for someone else's huge profit... I decided that I wanted to work helping people who didn't have support or needed help (not playing a martyr here, I promise)... that's why I left uni and decided to do this... best decision I ever made!!

Sorry again for the off-topic rant.

I haven't been called madam since I had long hair, when I was 3... and that was by a short sighted butcher (who, incidentally retired after losing a finger), so thank you for making me feel young again!!

Debra Steveson (who I love from Bad Girls) has only ever been average since starting in Corrie... and I agree that she was above average last night. Her scene with Janice should have been dark and gripping... but it wasn't. Janice overplayed it and it came across as a bit of anti-climax. It might get better when the brilliant Jane Danson is back tomorrow, but Corrie really does have too many cast members at the moment.

They need to get rid of the dead wood and bring in some actual characters... people with story and history already there.

Untill last night, she has been badly underused so I am not surprised that she has only been average. We need more Frankie.

Freda was an interesting character. The novelty wore off with Cilla months ago, so we need more Freda and far less Cilla and Battersby

I think Freda would be a good more permanent character - I was hoping she might come and go once or twice a year, drop in on Emily and annoy Norris.

I think Corrie's problem over the summer was that their main 'dramatic' storyline was Charlie and Shelley, and most of us didn't like it. They also kept focussing on evil Tracy and Steve, and most of us are fed up with that too (much as I liked Steve).

However there have been some great storylines this year (well I liked them anyway ) - Sally and Ian, Killer Katy, Leanne and Danny. The fall-out from the latter should be very good, especially with the Baldwin amnesia storyline coming up, which will probably tie into it.

Nah, she was cool. Mainly because she saw the upside to life....

Her bitchy one liners and listening into others convo's is cool.... can tie my own shoe laces to she said to Norris. lol

I'm all in favour of bringing her back as a regular feature. The comedic connection between her and Norris was brilliant
