The Great North / South Soap Divide!
I read a while ago that people tend to prefer soaps which are set in, or close to, the part of the country they live in. For example, people in northern England like Corrie or Emmerdale the best, and people further south prefer Eastenders.
Do people on DS agree with this? I'm a Yorkshire lass and Emmerdale is my favourite soap. However, it's not only because it is filmed in my area. I think it is a fantastic show overall and very well acted. My second fave soap happens to be Eastenders. ![]() I'm not forgetting people from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Eire here! Which soaps do you like best? |

Yes, I am Southern and EastEnders is my favourite soap and same with all the family. They are very snobbish when it comes to Conronation Street and are proud when they say they have never watched it for some reason.

I'm from the south and my favourite soap happens to be Eastenders but Corrie and Emmerdale do have some fab storylines.
Why Eastenders? I've been watching it on and off since 11 yrs old, for some reason mum wouldn't let us watch TV after 8 until i was in secondary school but the thing that annoyed me was when i reached secondary school age mum decided to let my younger sister stay up and watch EE as well LOL. Sorry went a little off tangent there.EE has had some great storylines over the years, the one storyline that i will remember the best is Jamie's death. Had a major crush on Jack Ryder when i was 16 - obviously distraught when it happened. After a bad couple of years i really feel EE is on the up, especially with Grant returning, i've really missed him. Nicola -x- |

Am from South love EastEnders best. PLUS it's filmed like right round the corner from me (as is Holby City) which excites me more because they use places from this area to film sometimes!
I do like Corrie though, just not as much. |

I can see what you mean cute chick and, although I live in the North West and my favourite soap is Corrie, I do tend to enjoy other dramas made in other parts of the country. Granted I hate EE but I do enjoy the odd London based drama

I'm from East Anglia and like EE and Corrie on the same scale. I also enjoy watching Emmerdale.
I also watch Neighbours every day, only because it is a good show. Last edited by Chubbler : 07-10-2005 at 16:45. |

I'm from Kent and at present Emmerdale is my favourite and Eastenders is my LEAST, so it doesn't work for me. However I'm sure it does for a lot of people, most of which won't be on this forum I'm guessing.

I'm from up north and I like Corrie and Emmerdale. Don't like Eastenders.
Hollyoaks is nearer to me (set in Chester filmed in Liverpool where I live) but I haven't watched that for years. Also with Brookside, I used to love that but stopped watching it towards the end. It was good when they went on location though seeing places I know, particularly when they filmed right by my primary school once. |

I'm about 45 miles from London and EastEnders is the only soap I watch regularly.
Although I do watch the odd episode of Corrie - but not really faithfully at all. I'm not sure it is to do with where I live though, I used to watch Emmerdale, Corrie, Neighbours, Home and Away and EastEnders, but Easties is the only one I like at the moment |

LOL, What if you live in the States?
Well I lived in Belfast for years, and went to University in Birmingham. Corrie and Emmerdale were and still are my soaps - Steph |

Im from the south east and I like Eastenders best
Corronation street used to have some really good storylines though, I used to think emerdale was a boring farming type show but some of the storylines look good recently I just dont have time 4 emmerdale.

Corrie's the one for me and I'm from northwest. I enjoy EE when it's riding high but it's the humour of Corrie that always swings it for me.
What I'm enjoying most about this thread is discovering which bits of the country everyone lives in. I don't know about you but I'm always trying to work out what sex, how old and where the people who post on this board live. For instance Drifter - I never had you down as Kent - that really surprised me. I think I'd placed you in Cornwall for some strange reason!

Well yeah, but I don't think you equate that to the region, cause the South West is far away from ALL the main soaps, and has the least in common with Eastenders than the rest surely..

What's this thread about then Taste SHOULDN'T be down to the area you live in, although as has been said, most Londoners probably do prefer - or at least watch, they are 2 different things - Eastenders to the others, and the same for the other regions. But the South West is an odd one, and I don't think Eastenders can be considered their nearest "local" soap, just cause the areas are SO different. |
