Yes, I think so. But not until the end of 2006. Johnny Briggs who plays Mike will then have celebrated 30 years in Corrie. He wants to retire to Florida I believe.

It's already started (slowly!) with him occasionally forgetting names etc.
Remember hearing somewhere (might have been from the soap woman on This Morning!) that the storyline involves
Spoiler

Am I right in thinking this is the first time a soap has tackled alzheimer's?

Yes, Mo Butcher. There is also a very good storyline currently in The Archers on radio 4 which started about six months ago, where Jack has a very sad and convincing case of alzheimers.
Mike won't be killed by alzheimers though presumably - he will have a heart attack/stroke. Same thing just happened to a friend of mine's mum in her 80s earlier this year - had alzheimers over about six months then died suddenly. |

Neighbours covered it. Helen Daniels married her cousin Michael, but shortly after it was discovered he was still married to his wife, who was suffering from the condition.

In most cases it is a slow cruel decline

yes i presume they will move him into nursing care somewhere away from the street, i think if done well this will be excellent. killing him off will not do the character justice as people rarely die suddenly from that form of dementia , as other posters have stated.

I guess it could be his Alzhemeirs causing his death through an accident though, which could happen at any time but gets more likely as time goes on. He could leave the gas on and light up ? Forget whether he's taken some tablets and end up overdosing ? You get the idea ....

yeah thats a possibility but most people with the full blown condition (as mike is rumoured to get) would not be left alone at any times. this is a possibility that he could be left alone but if corrie are going to do this then i doubt they would end it like that

he falls over at least once a month yet he's never even been hospitalised. Last week he fell over backwards clutching an ironing board yet he's still with us!We don't know what the writers have in store for Mike but I am sure they will have thought it out thoroughly - this storyline has been developed over a long time. |

You're right that Nana had a previous storyline when she was 'confused', but it turned out to be some kind of operable problem (I forget what) not dementia. She had an operation which 'cured' her.
