With EastEnders about to return to the top of the TV charts the reason Phil gets out of jail is revealed as Grant pays off the witnesses for the trial - without which the case collapses, and Phil is set free.

Yes, quite - The only witnesses were a security guard, paid off by Den, and a squad of coppers. Are we seriously to believe that Grant has managed to pay them off?

I'd say that Eastenders never dug themselves into a bigger hole than they did with this. Phil simply cannot be released in any believable way.

According to Ross Kemp in Soaplife Grant has "A quiet word" with the security guard who subsequently changes his statement...

Ditto. It's not the present powers that be's fault however, LB dug them into a hole with the whole set up and it was going to be practially impossible for them to get Phil out in any credible way - afraid it's typical of the lack of foresight that dogged the entire LB era.

Yes that is the whole problem isn't it - not to say that the police are incorruptible, but it seems unlikely that a squad of coppers could all be paid off at this late stage. Questions would be asked by the Chief Inspector.

I actually hope they just quickly mumble the excuses and move on, because no one is going to believe them so the sooner we can forget about it, the better.

I suspect that's what they'll do. And we'll all get over this outrage before too long and file it away in our memories along with such gems as the cardboard funfair, and the Ferreiras!
The important thing is - the're back!!!

Hypothetically what would happen if the sec guard turned round and said he saw den drag phil unconscious into the building?

Well, how would that change Phil being caught red-handed with a gun, escaping from custody, going on the run and then assaulting several police officers when finally recaptured?

If this 'quiet word' theory turns out to be true, then it's even worse than the 'case collapses' theory - at least the latter has some basis in reality.

I agree with Lippincote - let's hope they don't linger with this storyline.

I do love the way EE create storylines only never to be followed through. I hope the trial is never mentioned again and they pretend it never happened.

Just like Pauline's Irish sister and her family. For some unknown reason - they have never been mentioned since Mary left!

They must have also turned a blind eye to the coppers Phil beat the shit out of when he was arrested outisde the Vic.

I don't care really. It'll be forgotten about in a few weeks time. It's LB's fault anyway.

lol, must be bad when even you say it is, Trixie

Rita I guess my problem is that I am not that thrilled that they ARE back. If you are a Mitchell fan then obviously you don't much care how Phil gets released, as long as he does. Personally I would prefer he was banged up and offscreen for 20 years

I have fond memories of Grant, but I suspect that they are about to be soured, just like Den The Legend was ruined for me on his return.

Well he has been in jail for 6 months so I suppose that comes under time served but still the BBC worked with real judges for this so the reason must be a credible one or else I doubt they would have went with it.

Still not sure about it.

I would say that if they worked with real judges, or lawyers, and they're going with the story of Grant paying off the "witnesses" then they must have been told there's no way he would get off.

I would have liked phil to turn supergrass and in exchange for an early release he named the man who killed Jack Dalton. Of course, phils no grass.

There was a famous case in New York about 20 years ago where a mafia boss, with a mountain of evidence against him, was acquitted by a jury who had all been got at. But this is London, and Phil and Grant, tough as they are, are not the mafia.

That sounds about right rita! So they just went with the "oh most people won't care anyway, let's just mumble something about Grant paying off the entire police force and move on to Phil covering Ian in tomato sauce".
