Toshiba 37WL56 LCD TV bizarre subtitle line problem?
I have had this TV for about 6 weeks now, don't use the analogue tuner just DVD (via S-Video on AV3 for now) and RGB from a PACE freeview STB on AV1 as the main inputs.
on BOTH of these at infrequent and random times I'm getting a fake subtitle line come up with random characters in - eg % '$8 88 &))(E$ 88r ';[..#.'.' for about 5 seconds and then going off. Have tried EVERY setting I can think of, but can't stop this happening. It's just annoying really when I've spent so much on the telly. Toshiba want to take it away for repair which is a hassle but so far looking like my option. Have I missed something REALLY obvious or has anybody come across something like this before? cheers,Ian |

My first thought was a problem with the input signal quality, but that can't really be the case on 2 different inputs. Try the tuner - I bet it happens there as well.
It does sound like a job for the repairman - some kind of memory problem. |

I had a 27" Toshiba LCD earlier on in the year. However, I rely on subtitles heavily and when I put it on, it was scrambled and sometimes cut in half. I contacted Toshiba and they said that they were aware of the problems as they admitted that it was a fault with their teletext software in the TV. Needless to say I took it back to the shop and got a refund. It quite annoying that a firm knows that there a fault but still insist on selling the TV.

Ian are you sure that you have teletext switched OFF on the Tv - I do not know the model but if it has a subtitle button check this as well -
seems v obvius but as Freeview and DVD do not have teletext ..... BTW teletext subtitles often give decoder issues if the designers have not got things about right... |

Hmmm. Have now read the user manual (!) and the top two buttons are related to 'teletext services'. Will try these as I have a remote control obsessed 2 year old so anything is possible here. I just assumed no text in the sources would be ignored!
All, thanks for your time for looking at this, Ian |

Just in case anybody has the same issue - Toshiba are now aware that this is an actual problem with the set. Mine just got back from being repaired and no recurrence of the problem!!!! Swapped out a circuit board in the unit apparantley.
On another note - I cannot get back my settings (picture etc) from before it went. I found some suggested settings after a bit of googling a few months ago but can't find a source for them again. The swap out has left it at factory settings again. Anybody have recommended set up for this set so that I can reset (and write them down this time!) |
