I'm looking at getting a VOIP service as I'm starting a business from home that will require alot of sales calls to be made - has anyone else used a VOIP services for their business? if so what your thoughts on the quality, customer services, which company have you been using - Vonage seemed to be offering a good business deal?

We use Sipgate.co.uk for our Business VoIP Service and other than a few network problems it has been great.

Those of you with plug-n-play voip providers (i don't count sipgate, i mean vonage "take home, activate, there" types), if you download a file or something heavy during a voip call, does it break up or click, etc?

If your connection is maxed out it can cause problems with the other person not been able to hear you. But I have just limited my download/upload speed in my Bit Torrent client so as to leave a little bandwidth for Vonage to use this works fine. Downloads don't cause any clicking on the call.

I don't see the point in paying £10/month for vonage, when I can pay zero pounds per month for Sipgate and voip buster.

I suppose it depends how many calls you make. If you're a light user then just paying for calls is correct for you but if you're heavy user then paying a monthly fee and getting the calls for free can work out cheaper. Plus Sipgate is notoriously unreliable.

Have used them in the past but you just have to read posts in the uk.telecom.voip newsgroup where people are regularly complaing the service is off line.

You will find it is really just one or two people who use different names who try and rubbish Sipgate.

I have been there at the creation of uk.telecom.voip and supported Ivor in its creation.

As I have said I have been using Sipgate for all this time and never had all the problems you here those couple of idiots on there complain about.

It's only really gone down twice for a short while in its time, you will find it is more often than not people not being able to set SIP up correctly.

I was looking into VOIP on dabs last night... anyone used this?

Actiontec Electronics Internet Phone Wizard

Its configured to use skype as the provider, but 1866 offer free uk calls, can it be reconfigured, and is it any good?

18866 charge 1p/min on their VoIP service.

SipDiscount are currently 0c/min.

I use a LinkSys PAP2 ATA device - http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop...ProductID=2222

voipbuster now charge for their UK calls at 1 p a minute therefore it is generally cheaper to use their normal telephone company 18866 at 2p unlimited or their 1899 at 3 p unlimited. Voipbuster still offers many countries free USA and Germany for instance.
I share BexTech's opinions! It was BexTech who pointed me in their direction. I also have my local UK number with Sipgate and use Voipbuster with absolutely no probs. I am using a Fritzbox Fon (voip router) bought cheaply on Ebay for around £35 from Germany - It comes with QOS (quality of service) and gives priority to the telephone connection , so what one is a downloadin don't matter not know 'ow.

Yeah, have been for a month or two.

Started off a couple of years back at 1p/min, then went to 0.5p per minute, then to just 1p per call, 2p per call and now 3p per call.

You can buy it from www.sipgate.co.uk, though being a German company I think it is despatched from Germany.

You will find German retailers are usually cheaper, as long as you are able to pay German VAT and not UK VAT, as their VAT rate is 16% plus they offer lower prices, not just on VoIP equipment but on many electrical / electronic items.

This adapter looks ideal for my current plans at home.

One question - it refers to FAX support in the adapter, yet I thought that FAX support over VOIP was iffy to say the least? The only real reference I've seen to it is on the Vonage (OK, possible not the best example) page were they class it in their premium service type area as an extra fee.

FAX is a little iffy, even when you find a provider who uses the correct codec.
