With Xbox360 and Playstation3 being HD capable I would have thought we might have seen some cheap HD CRT televisions on the market in the UK. I know JVC do one but other than that there is nothing. I imagine there are a ot of people who when buying these consoles are not going to be keen on spending £1000+ for a proper 1080i LCD television, so why aren't manafcturers filling the gap in the market with HD CRT sets.

A proper 1080i LCD costs a fortune £6k ish for a Sharp.

The majority of HD Ready sets are a lower vertical resolution (700 odd lines).

There are cheap HD sets out there. We are talking the £600+ mark and are discussed in this very forum.

Cheap does not mean an excellent picture even though it is HD. My 32" HD LCD came to today and cost me £1800. You get what you pay for.

The market for CRTs is dwindling. The consumer wants big, thin and on the wall TVs.

There are meant to be some slimline HD CRTs coming out soon. By Samsung I believe.

Main reason is that they think anyone going for HDTV will have some cash and they want HDTV to be seen as a gateway into plasma and LCD.

They are trying to do the same with DVD recorders.

Yeah, they were supposed to be out months ago, there seems to be no news about them. Maybe Samsung decided to cash in on LCD's instead.

"slimline crt". Thats simply not possible. CRT tvs (HD Ready or not) will always have a big back to them.

Well that's marketing for you

The short neck CRT's are indeed smaller than their traditional counterparts but in no way can they be considered in the same league as plasma or LCD.

They've been out for months, they look very sexy but aren't a great deal slimmer than a standard CRT and there have been a fair number of problems with them, if AV Forums is to be believed (mostly geometry related). There's an HD 'compatible' version, but I don't think it has the connectivity to be deemed HD Ready.

Fantastic! at last there are HD CRT's coming in - Maybe people are starting to realise you get a sh*t picture on plasma and LCD. Especially Slim CRT- for an average living room that would be great.

Seen in another forum that the scaling on the Samsung is appalling - bendy lines ect.

I think traditional CRTs are on the way out, and plasma etc. will probably be replaced by SED eventually.

Samsung emailed me a month or so ago saying that they will be selling em..
..er soon.

meanwhile how about jvc HV-32D40 or any of there HV range. (though the tech spec seems oddly worded - I'm waiting for more information)

Yes, the SED Technology is very promising since they use the same principle as CRT (In a fashion) therefore you must get a better picture, response and viewing angle - must be the way to go.
I really don't believe LCD and Plasma justify themselves.

Im liking the the SED technology, so far i havent seen a decent standard defination picture look good on an LCD or a Plasma.

Dont get me wrong HiDef pictures on HiDef sets are nothing but stunning.

But my arguement is that whats the point of a HD set when you will probably just be watching repeats of 70's-80's Doctor Who on UKTV Gold.

A little expensive when you add shipping, VAT and import duty not to mention having not practical warranty

There is no argument that there are HD CRT's but thanks to the UK market and the delay in getting broadcast HD coupled with huge cuts in flat panel prices and corrosponding improvments in their technology has meant that HD CRT has been bypassed.
The profit is in flat panels designed and built for global markets.

Is there really any difference between the picture quality of a CRT vs LCD when both are given HDTV feeds?

Thats really the crux of the demand for HD CRTs. Simple fact is the majority of the people out there want the flat screens because they look better and take up less room...

Depends on the make/model of the displays.
CRT can give an awful HD picture because the technology is as much dependent on build quality/design and actual components as flat panel displays which can also be crippled by their own hardware short comings.
Apart from a handful of "high end" CRT's geometry will always be an issue, they simply can not match the perfectly flat and stable image that flat panels do by their very nature. I honestly believe that for SD a bit of distortion is not that big a deal but for HD well a minor geometry error is far more evident due to the increased resolution.

The manufacturers will support a market if there is one, alas the CRT market is shrinking (almost dead for PC domestic use) thanks in part to the huge increases in production of flat panels and the corrosponding reduction in price and performance increases.
There is little money to be made by the big manufacturers in CRT production, it's as simple as that.

yeah i just that one in currys fro £449, it has an HD 1080 logo embossed on it....

the model up DOES NOT have this HD logo on it - which was a surprise to me - and it was £50 more.

both are 100hz

i dont know to get the £450 one or not (on display \ last one)
