Does anyone know why BT sold it's Cellnet and Genie divsion, why Cable&wireless and Media one sold One2one and why Hutchison Telecoms sold most of Orange?

It was stupid what they did, since mobiles are a lot more popular than Pagers and Payphones!

BT demerged Cellnet,Genie, manx Telecom, pronto and their German,Dutch and Irish divisions in 2001 which became MMO2 and then just under two years later, BT launches a virtual mobile network service with it's former competitor!

Cable and Wireless and Media One sold One2one to T-Mobile part of Deutsche Telekom. One2One probably has the most customers connected to the network and then it has virtual mobile network deals with Virgin,Easy and Carphone warehouse. This would have been very profitable. Cable and Wireless should have bought out Media one's share in the company and then expand to other countries. That same year Cable and Wireless aquired Guernsey Telecoms.

Hutchison Telecoms spent years on researching and developing Orange (Since early 80's) and finally launched in the UK in 1994 as 'Orange personal Communications Limited'. Hutchison also operated in many other countries. Hutchison then sold most of Orange to Mannesman who had Orange for a short while and then offloaded it to France Telecom. Hutchison then launched 3-Hutchison as 3-Mobile, a poor quality mobile network which steals unused credit. Hutchison also owns orange and 3 mobile in Austrailia still, what is the point in having two seperate networks owned by the same company????

Orange seems to be doing well under France Telecom's ownership and next year Wanadoo will be rebranding as Orange.

I do not know why they did what the did.

One2One were much better before T-Mobile touched them in terms of Tarrifs and services.

Orange was much better.

Both of them always tried to be better. Now they all seem to be "bringing them selfs inline with other operators". Its just crap now. No innovation. They all try to be like each other instead of being better.

I think BT Cellnet was floated by BT as a separate company to improve shareholder value.

BT shareholders received mmo2 (now O2) shares. This allowed O2 to prosper in the mobile telephony market, whilst BT could sort out its own problems (and massive debts) in the landline and other telephony services.

You said something about Wanadoo rebranding as Orange - are we talking about the ISP Wanadoo?

I still have my old Genie numbers, now under O2 tariffs.
Bit of a shame because when I got these sims (for free then too) I got unlimited CSD (dial up) WAP access free and unlimited texts free too. I managed to send over 15000 before they limited it to 300 a month.

BT sold Cellnet due to the high amounts of debt it was in. It was a thorn in their side due to the 3G fiasco. Or so i have heard lol.

Cadbury's are selling their drinks division to concentrate on chocolate, this will be something they will regret doing in a few years time too.

(Nothing to do with mobiles).

Its all down to companies wanting to concentrate on core markets & it being the right decision at the time. BT expanded too quickly in the late 90s and needed to get some cash and ruduce debt, it spun off O2 to help it do this. Its said it should have kept O2 in the past, but now I think it sees more opportunities with its Vodafone partnership.

Again, C&W sold its stake in One2One because it needed cash, the price was right and it didn't fit in with its core business & its strategy for the UK. Personally I don't think One2One would have been able to compete as effectively as it has under T-Mobile (even though T-Mobile UK is currently underperforming), C&W & Media One just didn't have the right, or enough, resources.

Hutchinson might have the 2 brands aimed at slightly different market segments, there is no real reason why they can't have 2 networks in the same country as long as it is working for them, lots of companies have more than one brand operating in the same markets. Do they have a time limit on how long they can contiune to use the Orange brand? perhaps they are planning a transition to the newer 3 brand over time. Again, selling Orange UK arm of Orange was the right decision at the time for Hutchinson. France telecom only ended up with Orange after Vodafone bought Mannesman and was ordered to sell it.

Cable and Wireless got out of the consumer market, they also sold their cable TV business.
