I'm going to the US for a couple of months soon and rather than pay the extortionate price for calling from my UK mobile to numbers in the US I'm thinking of getting a cheap PAYG sim card for those calls.
Is it as easy over there to get a PAYG sim as it is here (i.e. five quid in a vodafone shop)?

I think that what DungBEEtle meant is that the way the mobile phone calls are charged for in the USA is different to that of most of europe in that most US punters pay both to make calls and recieve them - so even with a US PAYG sim you will probably still have to pay to recieve calls.

Virgin have a US Mobile Co. check out http://www.virginmobileusa.com/ for more info.

SIM Cards are still a bit short on the ground in America (The VAST majority of phones are still 'hard-wired' to their respective networks), but Virgin are still the best PAYG company in the US.

Unless you're going for Months though, just put your roaming on and don't use it unnecessarily...

Pop into Wal*Mart and buy one of their calling cards, it'll be much cheaper in the long run.

Another thing to remember is that unless your phone is Tri or quad band it won't work in the USA anyway, no matter what SIM you have.
