They cannot look you up in a directory but there are a number of ways to obtain your number (although they may not know who they are calling)

1. Were the numbers always ex-directory? If not, then historical records will exist.
2. If you don't withhold your number, you send it everytime you phone someone
3. Have you ever given your number to anyone? Maybe they have passed it on
4. Have you ever supplied your phone number to any company, organisation, competition etc? Everyone appears to ask for your phone number nowadays.
5. Although I don't think its legal, there is a technique to just dial every number possible. Any form of response (especially if you answer or you have an answer machine/voicemail) confirms that number is active - it is then added to a list that marketers can purchase

I'm sure there are other methods too.

If you are getting nuisance calls, speak to your landline provider (BT?) and Orange, explain your problem and they will offer advice.

If the nuisance calls are just non-solicited marketing calls, register with the TPS (Telephone Preference Service) and that should reduce the amount after about 28 days.

thanks for your reply

about 2 years ago we started getting nuisance phone calls after a situation occurred and they were mainly on my mobile one ring then hang up. we had a few on home phone so went ex directory and changed to new home phone number. my mobile is yearly contract so i change my mobile number every year. the one ring then hang ups have started again mainly on mobile but a few on home phone. i am logging these every time i get one as we had to get police involved last time. so just wondered how anyone could get these numbers as my mobile is only given to family and close friends?

If you are recieveing nuicence calls, you should report it to the network operator. please follow the step by step process below:

1. Write down the times and dates of these calls.
2. State if it is witheld, unavailable or any number left.
3. Contact your service provider.
4. Ensure that your number is not listed on 118118.com

Contacts:

BT Nuicence calls: 0800-661-441
Telewest Sensitive information bureau: 0800-953-3333
NTL: 0800-052-2000
Orange: 07973-100-150 or 150

Then, the network operator will contact the owners of the number or the company responsible for such calls and will tell them not to do it again.

If they do it again, contact the network operator again with the times and dates, and your network operator will inform the police. The company/person responsible could loose any trading licences they hold and can be prossecuted as it is a criminal offence.
