NEW ! Sony RDR-GXD500 'This disc is unrecordable'
digit_tw

Just bought this device yesterday and all seems to be running fine except it won't recognise the equally brand new TDK DVD-RW discs that I've put in it ?

It points to a formatting issue, but the device doesn't seem to be automatically formatting it either.

The Sony helpline isn't open until Monday now, though I will try John Lewis's later on to see if they have any ideas.

Does anyone have any ideas please ?

I have a Sony 510 and I've had a problem a while ago with
TDK dual layer disks failing to be recognised or not formatting.
I think the best thing is to simply avoid TDK disks which is what I have done.

btw: check the manual as I think it tells you the most suitable brands/disks

I have found the TDK DVD-RW discs to be very good. Make sure the discs are the 2X discs. Out of 40 discs, only had one fail. (The disc was erased on a PC and I think this was the problem)

If you want to try +RW, give the Philips 4X disc a go as these work fine as well - you will loose the option to "time slip" record with any other disc than DVD-RW in VR mode tho'.

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone had any comments on the SONY RDR HXD 710 twin tuner and integrated DVD Recorder(good or bad), which the press seem to be raving about in the latest 'What Hi-Fi', Awards Issue.
Or is too new to have any observations about it yet?

OOps!
Just noticed on another forum the 710 has only one tuner.
Ah well, I'll stick with my Fusion for the time being, and separate DVDR. I guess it does everything I want it to.

I have also seen problems with the -R format my post said.-
"I am able to record on Philips, Intenso and Sony DVD+RW / +R with no problems on my Sony Digital Video Recorder. But I have just tried to use the DVD-R format without any luck. I am using Maxell 1-8x DVD -R. The recorder loads the DVD and automatically prepares the disc. Using the Tools "Disc Info" the DVD is identified correctly as a DVD-R. Then when I start to record/dub something the "DISC IS DIRTY" error message is displayed and nothing else happens!!!! (They are brand new discs.)
The operations manual page 8 lists usable DVD-R as 16x or slower version 2.0/2.1.
I expected the Sony to record on this well known named brand.
Purchased DVD films on DVD-R play ok."

I returned the 50 discs to ARGOS (UK shop) who were great in giving me my money back. Have brought 5 Sony -R's to try then if they don't work I'll talk to Sony.
"Hoppy" replied to me saying Philips DVD-RW work fine, so if the Sony - media work I will try the Philips. Getting the help and experience from others as to the manufacturers media that work is invaluable.
I have already returned a Liteon 5045 as it was soooo buggy and the last straw was it wouldn't work with Philips DVD+R that work fine in the Sony.

When I first got my 500 I had a few "disc is dirty" or similar messages with one or two secondary brand discs. I tend to use Verbatim or Imation now -R/-RW/+R/+RW and very rarely get such a message. If I do, I just swear at the thing and reinsert it once or twice and it is OK.
It don't think it is necessary to swear at it but I do anyway.

I followed Bix's advice and took the blank JVK DVDs back to Lewis's who verified for themselves that they wouldn't work. So, they tried some JVC ones which worked a treat and did a straight swap.

The JVC ones, well the first one of a pack of 5, seems to be working just fine and also recording subtitles as well which is a must in our household.

Thanks all for your posts

I've used loads of Maxell 8x DVD-Rs, they work a treat here - no problems at all. In fact I haven't had a single disc failure since I bought the unit (touch wood), very pleased.

I have now tried Sony 1-8x DVD-R and thankfully they worked. Maybe I had a bad few Maxell, but like you up to then I had never had a single disc failure.

My mistake - my Maxells are all 4x, I could have sworn I had the 8x variety as well. I have some 8x Memorex and they work a treat.

Saying that...

They work fine in SP mode, but try to record in SLP and it gets between 1-2 minutes into the recording, flashes up an error on the display (C1400 or something) and shows "The disc is dirty" on the screen.

I don't see how the recording mode should make the slightest bit of difference as to whether they work or not, it may have been coincidence but something worth bearing in mind.

I have now used successfuly.-

Maxell DVD+R ..1-4x
Philips DVD+R..1-8x
Sony DVD+R..1-8x
Intenso DVD+RW..1-4x
Philips DVD+RW..1-4x
...and finally just to make sure the minus format works.-
Sony DVD-R..1-8x.

So the "Disc is Dirty" problem was just with the.-
maxell DVD-R..1-8x.

Mainly in SP and LP and have tried LSP format.

I think it is just a matter of getting used to a type then sticking with it. I must have used nearly 50 Philips DVD+R..1-8x.

ps.
I have stopped dubbing up to DVD in FAST mode as I was experiencing editting jumps... Something else to change/try!

I've just bought some Sony DVD -RW 1-2x disks for the GXD500 and have been having problems with them.

You think being Sony....

Three were perfectly alright and would format in both modes (VR/Video) the rest would not format at all at first.

The next day three more would format OK in both modes, leaving just four. I then formatted these on my PC first and then re-formatted on the recorder. One could be formatted in both modes the other three only in video mode.

I couldn't be bothered to return them to the shop (too much aggro) but I more or less got them all working one way or the other.

Best I've found so far is Maxell 1-2x speed DVD-RW from Argos (special offer buy two packs of 5 and get one free) ie £12 for 15. Seem to work all the time, no probs...

I have had my GXD500 for almost a year now and have used only DVD+RW 4x disks. The DVD+RW 4x disks by Imation have worked perfectly but I am now interested in trying DVD-RW disks.

The manual states that 2x speed or slower DVD-RWs are required? Is this the case?

Yes, that is correct. Try these discs, as they work well.

Very important, TDK DVD-RW 4x are NOT comopatible with DVD recorders.

I guess they're 4X speed and not 1-4X
