I have a sony rdrhxd710 and it suffers from ghosting ie
when I switch to the digital tuner you can see the analogue in the background
ie

lines across the screen in fact you can see the analogue program in the background
does anyone know what causes this or is it a fault in the machine its self
I am thinking of sending it back?
many thanks for your reply

Is it connected via SCART, is the analogue picture in the background what is on the TV or DVD recorder? To check tune the TV to a seperate channel to the recorder. If it's what is on TV, then a high quality SCART lead is required.

hi yes it is connected via a scart and a high quality one to
but this does not solve the problem
I am wondering if these machines are only supposed to be used with lcd tvs or plasma tvs which do not have an analogue tuner

I think the internal digital tuner on this sony is a load of crap
pardon my french

It would not matter if your TV was CRT or Flat Panel. It may be an internal fault with the DVD recorder. As to your comment about the Sony digital tuner being c**p, I have had no problems with the RDR-GXD500 tuner. The GXD500 does not have an analogue tuner.

Mine works perfectly with a normal CRT tv. Have you tried it on a different TV? I have a nasty feeling this is a problem inside your tv setup rather than with the sony.

Does the ghost image get recorded?

Are you sure that the ghost analogue image is coming from the 710? Try ensuring TV and 710 analogue tuners are not on the same channel to see where the ghost is coming from.

I've seen some TV's (eg Goodmans) where the TV feeds its picture out of the scart and if pin 16 (rgb blanking) is activated, two pictures (unsync'd) can be seen. Also video and audio come from different sources. There is an answer to this.

I had this problem, and replacing all the leads with quality ones didn't help. Solved the problem in the end by tuning the analogue channel on the TV to a spare channel - perfect picture now! The rdrhxd710 replaced a Sony VTXD800U as the main Freeview box (now daisy-chained with the new unit), and it's apparent that the VTXD800U produces the better quality picture - the 710 suffers from pixellation on fast motion, something that the 800 has never exhibited.
