Why are all the "singers" on this show so bland in choce of songs and style? Ok so I dont watch regular, and saw last weeks, but everyone is so whimsical and safe!
No-one as anything distinctive about them,Chico -I think-tries to inject some excitement but he'll be off soon.
Its all very Radio 2 singing style, designed to appeal to housewives and grannies.Where are the rock singers or at least someone who has an edge to their voice? Tabby of last year tried and -despite Sharon Osbourne's allegiance to him-hasnt been heard of since.
Look at Steve Brookstein of last year-you'll find him in McDonald's,lol-blandness personifed.
Not that it matters as 6 month down the line they'll be forgotten about anyway.

I agree I think each one sings the same type of songs every week

I think they should have theme weeks like they did in Pop Idol to test their singing/performing ability out of their comfort zone. That would be more interesting

The judges want them to sell records, and unfortunately, the people who buy one record a month in Tescos are houswives and grannies and middleaged men. They buy innocuous bland stuff they saw on Parkinson or heard on Radio 2 like Katie Melua, David Grey, Michael Buble, etc etc, the list goes on.
So that is who and what we see in these competitions. And any public phone in type thing always knocks out the truly different, see any series of Big Brother to see that the blandest come out on top as they offend the least.

I'm not sure I'd entirely agree, Shayne doing that Bedingfield song was hardly safe. Also, if the majority are safe it is hardly a surprise when those doing a different type of song get voted out (Phillip anyone?)

They're not all bland, but it's inevitable that blandness will win through. For something to appeal to the bulk of people, it has to be inoffensive, middle of the road and bland.

Well it's the only way I can explain that Coldplay and Dido sell so many records anyway...

dunno. I Dislike Coldplays music, but love Dido's and Katies. I like the Pink Floyd and the Sex pistols, but dislike Radiohead. I dont like Robbie Williams, but like Will Young.
As you yourself have said IC, its really all down to personal opinion and what makes you feel good and what you enjoy listening to.

If a song uplifts me then its not bland, whoever is singing it or whatever style.

I think the other judges should choose the songs, as a way of testing their ability. So for instance, if Simon hates Chico, he could give him a Pavarroti song. It would then be up to Chico to make it entertaining. Sharon could give The Conway Sisters an S Club song. It would liven things up a bit.

If someone really has the X Factor, they should be able to perform anything. There did have 75,000 people to choose from.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that to appeal to a larger number of people (which essentially is what the X Factor contestants have to do), they need to be quite middle of the road, inoffensive and slightly bland. It's how almost anything becomes massively popular (although there are, as always, exceptions to the rule). It's no good just appealing to one part of the X Factor audience, you have to get votes from across the board, and the easiest way to do that is to go down the middle.

I don't mean any offence by saying some music is bland, but I hope that makes more sense!!!

There's no need for the sarcastic face. You are entitled to your opinion but why shouldn't someone buy something they've heard on Parkinson, Radio 2 etc ? Referring to your post (#3) -you're obviously not a housewife, granny or middle aged man -god help you when you are one day and have to revert the depths of buying bland music in Tesco's that we have had the misfortune to listen to in the media...............
