BT Bill over £750! Thanks little sis!
We get our phone bill quarterly. Our usually bill is usually no more than £100.
However my sister, through her teenage phase has run up a bill over £750! My question is, do you think BT have been responsible allowing our bill to rack up to over £750.? We have had our line over 5 years, and this would I stuck out like a sore thumb? If we never got our bill when we did, the amount could be a lot more, it like giving BT a license to print money. |

My question is, do you think jaybee24uk's parents have been responsible allowing their daughter to rack up the bill to over £750?
From your post, it appears there has been no fraudulent activity on the account, and no mistakes made by BT. Responsible use of a credit account comes with the territory. Part of the terms and conditions of the credit account with BT is that the account holder is responsible for all calls made on that account (unless proven to be fraudulent). Maybe time your little sis (a) was banned from using the home phone (maybe you could get her a PAYG mobile if she *really* can't live without a phone) and (b) got a job to both help pay off the majority of the £750 bill and to fund the PAYG mobile if that is decided on. |

At the end of the day, little sis, has racked up a big phone bill hasn't she
![]() I just think, BT should monitor their account a bit more. Take these poor soul who accidently download these dialers, and their bills rockets! If I had a credit card, I'd have a limit. I guess if our usage of electricty rocketed at the same rate, it would have been investigated ( they would probably think I was growing weed in my loft )But my only grip is how high would the let the phone bill go up to ???? £1,000's maybe???? |

Well yeh, you try spending an extra £500 on credit cards, and alarm bells start ringing! Would be nice if they'd alert you!
I was in Spain over the summer and racked up £70 on my mobile; not a problem as company paid it, but shocked me, I spend about £10 a month on it! |

If a dialer has been making the calls, it's likely to be to a premium rate or international desination. BT will probably see this and take action, if not calling them will sort it out.
BT offer Call my Bill, which allows you to check your calls from last bill updated every 24 hours. They also allow you to check your calls online, 24 hourly updated too. They also offer charge advice, which calls you at the end of every call and tells you the cost. As it's been said, the owner of the phone has to take responsibility for calls made on their line. BT offer services for their customers to monitor their usage |

Doesn't everyone have a credit limit on their BT account? I have, I am pleased to say.
I think the responsibility definitely lies with the bill-payer, I know if I found someone abusing my phoneline I'd certainly have something to say. There is the BT Together Option 3 which allows you to call any UK landline number any time of the day free of charge for £25(ish) a month. The alternative has already been mentioned, tell the little brat to get a job and make her learn the true value of money - some of which can be used to pay towards the bill, the rest on credit for a PAYG mobile phone. |

Well, I'm sure landline-to-landline calls would be reasonably cheap in the evenings, but any calls to mobiles are expensive, and that's part of the reason why I hate them so much, and probably why your bill is so high, unless your sis was ordering stuff off premium rate service lines. Mobile to mobile calls are expensive, unless you're on the same network or have contract phone with inclusive minutes (and even then you're only restricted to 01 and 02 numbers; and calling companies with 0870 and 0845 numbers cost loads; another reason why I hate these numbers in general). |

BT Bill
BT are very responsible for this matter. Usually, BT customers are given a credit limit, this is usually £100.00 within a month or quater, I would contact BT and ask them to do the following:
1. Set a credit limit of £50 to £100 2. Order call baring. (The bar which only bars mobiles, premium rate and international numbers) |

) You cannot get such a bar. The bar which bars mobiles also bars national landlines... Rather silly when one call can cost 5.5p and the other more than £10 in the evening for an hour......... But they don't have a very up to date barring system!

No credit limit on my phone afaik - I'm sure I would have hit it by now if there were. I've definitely spent well over £100 in a month (£300 per quarter) before now - don't you just love company expenses ![]() New customers possibly have credit limits imposed, maybe based on their deposit. ![]() Edit: New customers have an agreed credit limit temporarily imposed to allow them not to have to pay a deposit: Quote:
New customers - Call levels Source: bt.com
This is a free service which removes the need to pay a deposit for virtually all new customers. New customers will be asked to agree with us a quarterly call level which represents the maximum value of calls they would expect to make in a quarter (including VAT but excluding any call discounts). If the call level is reached before the normal quarterly bill is due to be sent out, BT will contact the customer to agree a course of action. Last edited by dawson : 12-11-2005 at 00:45. |

Call baring
BT's call baring service is very out of date.
If you want to make calls to areas outside your dialing code and surrounding areas including 0870 numbers but not to premium rate,international,mobiles,070 and paging numbers, then you should switch to Telewest who offer this service for £1.50 per month. Telewest call baring level 1 which bars calls to premium rate numbers only is FREE. The BT credit limit is for new customers and expires after 3 to 6 months. However, you may be able to get it back. Other BT alternatives: Telewest NTL Bulldog (CW) Wight Cable |

BT do free premium rate call barring.
It is also possible to use a dialler box if the master socket it out the way, like in a cupboard which can be locked. Will cost about £15 one off |

Dialer boxes
A lot of people are tired of these dialer boxes and people want the minimum amount of wiring and equipment as possible these days.
I suggest BT should pull it's finger out about this! |

this sort of complaint is what i get most days working for bt.
1/ bt does not put limits on telephone bills 2/ the service for new customers is call levels and this will only produce supp bill if you go over agreed call level. 3/ bt cannot monitor everyones accts on an individual basis 4/ there are services to barr lines , call barring, prem rate barring . 5/ when i was younger i knew that if i used the phone and rung up a bill , my dad would fckin kill me. 6/ are parents the problem as much as the childs, by always blaming bt instead of there little cherub. |

6/ are parents the problem as much as the childs, by always blaming bt instead of there little cherub. As someone who works for 150 half of my day is spent with customers who say "I have calls on my bill that haven't been made from my house." A few questions later and you find out that they have teenage children who have, of course, point blank denied that they made the calls, normally you find they are premium rate calls for games on Sky Digital or the sons mates mobile number. The late of control some parents seem to have is amazing. You enjoying the new credit checks dundeered? It is amazing the number of people who decide they don't want a line when you tell them a credit check will be done.

I love the 'well i didnt make the calls, so i'm not paying'
Well Sir/Madam your phone has made these calls, I can quite easily see your number has dialed them. Do you have any sons or daughters. Line goes quiet for a moment I'lll f*****g kill them. BRRRRRRRRRRR noise as the phones been hung up lol. Always funny The silence is the penny dropping ![]() The onus should never be passed to the company, the person who owns the phone owns the debt. If you carnt afford to pay a bill don't allow it to be used. |
