For those who have become fans of a particular act, do you really want them to win?

The reason I ask is, apart from Will Young (and any of that American Idol lot), what winners have done well for themselves? They all realase a single, then sink without a trace. The last two winners of this type of competiton (Steve Brookstein and Michelle McManus) have done particularly badly sales wise.

The only ones who do well are those who are runners up!

So shouldn't you be campaining for your favourite act NOT to win?

Who knows.

I'm a huge Journey South fan and I'm rooting for them, and I guess, I hope that if they do win, then they would have a bit more success than the winners that you mentioned.

But, hey, I'll be ecstatic if they get down to the last three, as then they still have a good chance of getting a deal.

But, yeah, I want them to win.

People always say, "oh, they all get a record contract anyway," but it's not always true. G4 will go the same way as Gareth Gates in a few years. Javine was doing ok until she took on Eurovision and lost. Tabby can't even sell a kidney for a record contract. Sam and Mark anyone?

no i dont want my favourites to win.
I think the person that wins needs to be like Will young ie someone that would make their own decisions rather than following simon cowells advice of releasing cover after cover

i think if the correct act wins it is a good thing, they would get the most from being in the xfactor

I think if the winning act is managed by Louis then they will have a good chance of getting somewhere as he seems to have a good track record with regards to rtv so far:

i.e. Girls Aloud, G4

whereas Simon has a bad track record:

Michelle McManus, Steve, Gareth (although he did sell a lot of records initially)

Will Young afaik broke away from him to become successful

& Sharon is a bit of an unknown quantity although she got nowhere with Tabby, Cassie etc - I find it unlikely that she be able to do much - I imagine if she has the winning act she will just hand it all over to a management team and take credit if the act does well.

All that said I really can't imagine any of the acts getting anywhere even with Louis's magic touch.. Girls Aloud & G4 had some sort of hook with their act - this lot have nothing imo just generic pretty people that are 10 a penny..

*edit* actually Journey South may be the one's who could potentially do OK as i do think they could have something a bit different to offer if given some new material - unlikely as they have Simon - so we can look forwards to another Unchained Melody..

I think there are a couple of reasons why the winners of these shows tend not to sell records....
Firstly, what the public want to watch on a TV show is not necessarily what they would want to buy.....The X Factor is a popularity contest more than it is a talent show. We get to know a bit about the contestants lives and they become like friends and this is what generates good viewing figures. Michelle Mcmanus won Idol because the judges knocked her for being a larger lady and a lot of the general public reacted to that. Steve won the first X Factor because he was portrayed as 'Mr Nice but unlucky in the music industry' and also because Sharon had a go at him. Doesn't necessarily follow that the same people who voted for these contestants actually enjoy there singing enough to buy their albums.
I also think that if the winners were presented with original material to record and not just naff covers, more people would buy their stuff....even people who didn't watch the program.
Will Young is exempt from all this because he was the original idol and the bland formula of nice guy/dull covers/album sales/ultimate success was based on his own experience of success....the expectations of his career were not as predictable because he was effectively a reality TV guinea pig.
Also it's worth bearing in mind that Will has also recorded a fair amount of original material since winning idol and most of it has been great pop music. He's at the top of his game now because he deserves to be based on the strength of his music and skills as a performer and not because he won idol....
I'm not convinced that any of the X Factor contestants this year could sell records in todays market....perhaps Nicholas is the best bet...he's the most contemporary...

Alex Parks (FA2 winner) has just released her second album, and it's much better than her first. But then, IMO, FA was streets ahead of any of the Idol/X-Factor shows since it showcased the whole of the contestants' talent - singing, performing AND writing.

G4 haven't really been marketed as a pop act....they fit more into the Michael Ball catagory!!!!! I think they will struggle to maintain a career in music personally....

My favourite is Chico (((MEGA-CHICO-TIME))), and of course I want him to WIN!

But not just win - I want him to conquer - to go where no man has gone before - to bestride the world with his greatness - to.....To...

(I am not a megalomaniac)

Although I do prefer some acts over others I don't really care who wins. I look on it more as a game show where you've got to see if you can guess who's going to be in the last three.

God that sounds awful doesn't it seeing as we're talking about peoples careers.

This is precisely why winning acts don't sell...

Reality TV Is the worst way to get famous though; as soon as it's over the winning act is supposed to have released an album within a day before all the hype is over........ how can an artist really release a good well thought out album in that time? No wonder Steves album was full of covers.

Well looking at the poor acts we have in there are any of them winners who will be around 4 years down the lines, selling out arenas that hold 11,000 people all over the country, having number one singles and albums... mmm NO maybe not. Unless they have something different, and are stronger then the younger ones like Gareth Gates. Will Young stood up for himself but he was never with Simon Cowell, he is with Simon Fuller, the one suing Cowell.. So maybe that is why as anything that Simon Cowell touches appears to fail.. unless they are puppets like Zig and |Zag.. they do not answer back maybe. For me the reason G4 did well is because the had Louis W and not SC..

I wonder if they even want the winner to do well, think about that, if they spend the 1m and then it fails they rake in all that dosh from the show, and Michelle and Steve B were dropped even before the end of their contracts.

That's pretty good, considering there hasn't been much promotion surrounding it, or at least, none that I have seen anyway.

You have to remember as well that we only get to choose 'our' winner from a handful of acts....when you take your cash into a record shop/supermarket, there are a lot more than 12 acts to choose from!!!! Unless reality talent shows can literally boast the best talent in the country, the vast majority of winners will fail to shift records....
Also, all the acts are vocalists-i've always been more of a bands person myself....

I don't know about Michelle McManus, but Steve Brookstein was not dropped before the end of his contract. He has had a legal wrangle to get out of his contract after his refusal to release a second album of covers as the record company wanted him to do.

Whether the winner of XF2 has a successful career or not will depend on the backing and support the record company are willing to give them. TBH I do not think they are looking for a successful recording artiste. What is the point when they can make millions from voting revenues??

But that is the whole point of my OP. She won FA and she hasn't done very well. Lemar was a runner up and is now picking up MOBO's right left and centre!

I agree. I don't understand all this 'it only' got to number seven etc. I'm sure when I was younger (many years ago!) you were doing pretty well to get in the top 40!

I think people nowadays don't see you're success unless you reach number 1!
