Anyone Using Freetalk?
Are there any Freetalk customers (www.freetalk.co.uk). I was thinking of signing up but wanted some opinions. I am currently a Vonage customer and find the service very reliable but Freetalk is cheaper. How good is the service is it relaible, good sound quality and also is the customer service any good?
Thanks in advance. |

Don't think many people are, even in uk.telecom.voip there doesn't seem to be anyone using them.
Most people who are using VoIP want to not spend any/much money. Are you using a Vonage locked device, or was yours one of the un-lockable PAP2 ones before they made them non-un-lockable? You could give www.sipdiscount.com a try and use www.sipgate.co.uk for an incoming number. This is the combination I am using at the moment. |

The device I'm using is locked to Vonage I'm afraid.

I have a PAP2 that was manufactured to be used by any SIP service, it is a nice little ATA. |

It's a Linksys RT31P2-VU. Is that unlockable?

This is the router/VoIP ATA, there are people posting that they have managed to unlock their devices, but also that Vonage disconnect you from their service if they find you have.

They poll the device and get it to display their end the details, from there they can tell if it has been unlocked. Whether they routinely do this I don't know.

Using freetalk with a USB modem
I'm thinking about getting freetalk for my parents. It looks simple for them to set up.
I'd like to know if you can use it with a usb modem and how dose it connect to your PC. Any help would be appreciated. |

It does work with a USB modem, but this way is a little Heath Robinson, you need your PC on for it to work.

I signed up to Freetalk yesterday. When I entered my card details into their website, they decided to charge £40 to my bank account without my permission.
Not happy at all - from calling their customer services dept, they said this is a common occurance with Halifax customers. No refund yet - letter of complaint on it's way. Be wary! |

Mine has been pending for 2 days but I'm still truly annoyed that they've zapped my Available Balance without my permission. I've got a cheque due out today, it probably won't clear now due to insufficient available funds. I called Trading Standards yesterday, they said to see how far I get with a letter of complaint. On the phone, all I seem to get is an American chap called Jeff. |

It's a process called "shadowing" I've never come accross this before. I'll wait a few days to see what happens. |

Normally billing will occur during the first week of the month, actually being due on the first of the month. The billing this month has been delayed. You should see a charge for your freetalk service on approximately November 22
On the plus side, the service seems fairly good although for some reason the 'Call Forwarding' feature doesn't work.

It is a good service, call quality is good, I just can't get the 1471 service towork. |

Just got off the phone to the bank, they say 5 days before they can do anything - they've noted my request.
I phoned Freetalk back and gave them a rollocking. They wanted to wait until the money clears of it's own accord but I asked them to do it manually - I quoted the UK Sale of Goods Act 1982 - I hate doing that, makes me sound like I complain all the time! |

I bought two freetalk adaptors 6 weeks ago when they were selling them for £20 for the year. I've not had any billing problems and the service has been comparable to my BT line. I've pluged the Freeserve box into my router so a pc doesn't require to be booted for it to work.

My aunty signed up for FreeTalk. She said that her old supplier told her that FreeTalk had to cancel them for her, who refused, and neither will let her drop them, so she's paying for 2 call services. You are also beign charged to phone to America when you ring to find out.
She also had to spend £80 on some thing for the computer because it wouldn't work otherqwise, which they also didn't tell her. She's annoyed with them, and by what she's said, they are awful, so don't join, they don't even have a small print by the looks of things ![]() Just plugging this fact for her |

Yes, they certainly are dodgy from my experience. They say that using Freetalk, calling America is 2 or 3p per minute yet they charge 5p for calling the support number!
Elisabeth - can you find out what your Aunty needed for her PC? The only thing she may have needed was a Network Card and they are about £10 - if she paid £80, she was conned! Even if you do join Freetalk, you can't drop your original supplier because Freetalk can't access 999 Emergency Services! Freetalk is only useful for making savings on calls over a long period of time - it can also be handy to have 2 lines (I live with my Fiance who is always on the phone!) I would definately check out some of the other suppliers out there such as Vonage etc... there are also some free services available if you look elsewhere in other threads.

I think Elisabeth's Aunty didn't realise it was a VoIP service, it seems she thought it was a CPS or full line rental and call service that you could replace your BT line with.
If you have cable broadband, then you could ditch your landline (like I have). The £80 she mentions is the cost of the adaptor with 1 years subscription. Either Elisabeth's Aunty didn't look into it to well, didn't understand what it was all about or a salesperson mislead her. |
