It's the only Christmas song ever deliberately played in our house - always gives me a lump in the throat thinking about Kirsty McColl though. Really hope it's number one this year.

I know what you mean. Its too early for Christmas just yet. Im glad I havent heard any Christmas songs. I think DJs playing it this early should be shot!!

I find it really offensive when she crows 'cheap lazy f*ggots' very homophobic and she has sso much hatred and disgust in her voice.

I cant even type the word.

Victoria Newton has a campaign to get it to no1 for Xmas, so I hope it flops.

I don't think 'faggots' means 'gay' in this song!

FTONY is like a short story. It's about two working class Irish emigrants and that's refected in the dialogue they've been give. Shakespeare doesn't necessarily condone murder just because Lady Macbeth does; Ice T wasn't advocating the mass slaughter of coppers... There's a difference between a writer's views and the views expressed by one of his fictional characters.

Good summary Snax. Compared to half of the R'N'B and Rap stuff that gets played on primetime radio, where every other word is blanked out, Fairytale can hardly be considered offensive.

Is Victoria Newton the Bizzare columnist in The Sun? If so I hope she gives the re-release loads of promotion nearer to Christmas.

The bookies are starting to take interest too. Most are offering odds on the song getting to Christmas No. 1, but it's not quite up there with the favourites just yet!

The Pogues have just got to kick Westlife's arse!! And as for that f***ing frog...

It's dialogue as part of the story, not necessarily the view of the singer. The "hatred and disgust" is because that's what Kirsty's character feels. She really was very talented at putting forward emotion, and her songwriting credentials were also very good. Poor Kirsty

I love this song so much. I had to download it as my xmas album from years ago had it but it was only a tape so when I bought the new-edition CD the song wasn't on there. Grr, the album is called The Greatest Xmas Album in the World Ever, I think.

So its been re-released. I may have to buy it then. I've heard rumours of the xmas no.1 contenders and I'm not impressed with what I've heard, but I haven't heard them all.

It's on "If I Should Fall from Grace With God" - one of the best of all time IMHO.

Quite right...you sound like a bit of a Pogues fan Snax. Are you going to any of their gigs over Christmas? I'm seeing them at Brixton Academy on the 21st.

I'll be Ireland. I've never seen them live so I'll try and catch one of their other gigs on this tour. I really don't like the Brixton Academy either - got to be one of the worst venues in London.

Ill second that! I'd be quite happy for anyone to knock Westlife off their stool, but if The Pogues do it, that would be great!

Can someone film Westlife being knocked off their stools by Shane McGowan? I'd pay good money to see that.

Being as this thread is sort of about The Pogues, can I just say that everyone needs to listen to their version of "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda". I've never been so close to crying over a song

Agreed Lurker...great song. One of the best things about the Pogues is the way they totally kick arse in a punk irish style one minute then hit you with the most beautiful ballads the next. Their songs are all about life...Shane once said that pretty much all of the songs are about 'drinking, fighting and f***ing...'

Fairytale for Christmas No. 1...SPREAD THE WORD!!!

I have two decks in my front room (but then I piddle around with DJing occasionally).

I gave my sister a vinyl copy of "Oklahoma!" a few years ago, and her kids hadn't seen a record before...

T'Pau's China In Your Hand was number 1, IIRC

It was Pet Shop Boys 'Always on my Mind' that actually kept it from being Christmas Number One.

That's a very selfish reason to impose Westlife on the rest of us

Put your money on The Pogues now, the odds are much better, then get behind the 'Fairytale for Christmas No. 1 campaign' to increase your chances!!!

The 'stinky tramps' down the end of my street are more entertaining than bloody Westlife.
