Where are the profits from the song going, what charity?”

Not sure what the exact charity is, but according to the band's official website www.pogues.com all of the proceeds are going to charities for the homeless.

I guess this kind of ties in with the lyrics of the song itself, and is a fantastic cause to support at any time of year, but especially at Christmas.

Not only is it the best Christmas song ever, it's simply one of the best songs of all time. Would love to see it make #1 as it only reached #2 the first time round. There's surely nothing that deserves it more, but whether Westlife or Crazy Frog fans would agree is, sadly, highly unlikely!

Kirsty was such a hugely undervalued British talent and although she didn't write her part, Shane provided a song more than worthy of her genuis which shines through so brightly in this song. It can't be celebrated enough. It is joyous ("The bells are ringing out for Christmas day"), and to finally make Christmas #1 (albeit 5 years after her death) with her Mum and Son's blessing would be a fitting tribute.

Haha, I can't really see The Pogues sitting down and having a light hearted chit-chat with Jonathon Ross or someone. That's just ASKING for trouble.

The be all and end all is this : it deserves to be number one, it should be number one, and anyone who buys something else and doesn't make it number one clearly knows nothing about music and so should be discredited.

The release date has been put back to 19th December as the 'official' Christmas number one is being revealed on Christmas Day.

There is to be a 7" vinyl single, a CD single and a DVD single which features the promo video and the band's original Top Of The Pops performance from 1987.

Most bookies are now offering 12/1.

Definately the best Christmas song of all time. Has everything you could want from a seasonal tune. Something about the piano on the intro that chokes me up everytime I hear it. I always try to make it the first Christmas song I listen to on Advent Sunday just after I put my decorations up.

If a song ever deserved to be Christmas no. 1, this is it. Not just because of Kirsty, but because it sums up that feeling of Christmas. That feeling that you should be doing something better than you are. The song is so evocative - you can imagine a desperately unhappy couple in a room in New York, trying to get through Christamas Day with nothing to celebrate.

According to Philip Chevron from the band they will be doing a small number of TV and radio appearances over the Christmas period to promote the single. Not sure if they will make Rossie or Parkie though!

kirsty has an extremely emotional, strong voice and, singing fairytale of new york with the pogues - her voice interacted superbly with shane mcgowan's - is one of her best songs. her greatest hits album is spectacular! she is a sad loss to the music industry.

I'd beg to differ.... Well, at least she should do a good job of highlighting why Kirsty was such an integral part of this song's magnificence. Utterly irreplaceable.

I agree, she's just not right for the job. She hasn't got the 'attitude' or the right sort of voice for this song IMO.

Nobody can do this song other than the original artists (which of course is not possible)

I used to like it but I am sick to the death of it already.

Oh I agree, I mean no one can be better than Kirsty to do this song, the orginial will and always will be the best.

The Ronan keating version was absoulutley horrendous, the worst cover ever, maybe its because its just the best ever.

All I was saying is that Katie Melua (even though she won't do as good as Kirsty-obviousley) is a decent respectable artist, who's in it for the music rather than getting on page 3, and be a little pop whore. At least kirsty isnt getting replaced by Jordan, or something terrible like that..i hope you see my point.lol. Besides its just for one performance, it's not like shes taking over Kirsty in the singles, and I think Katie will do a good job, I really do hope this song gets to number one, forget it being a christmas song, I think its my favourite song of all time period. its just wonderful.

Katie Melua has got a horrible horrible voice. She is also all that is wrong with the music industry today (fake and manufactured posing as a semi credible artist, one of Michael Parkinson's many clones).

Katie is OK at what she does, but completely wrong for this song. She is far too nice - you can't imagine her singing those lyrics with any conviction.

Still - if it's just for the TV show no great harm will be done and any publicity is good publicity.

Maybe there's a different side to Katie that we don't normally see! Anyway, I think she will do a great job and the main thing is that the song is going to be played live on one of the most popular TV shows which has to be good for the Christmas number one campaign!

Am I right in thinking Fairytale has never been performed live on TV before, with the exception of the mimed TOTP appearances?

Hmmm not sure ^

Anyone have any news if they will be on any other tv shows?
