Its not billed to be on Jonathan Ross tonight, the bbc website says:-

Friday Night with Jonathan Ross
Jonathan's guests include Jack Black, star of Peter Jackson's latest blockbuster King Kong, Jools Holland, Will Young, and music from Paul Weller

Wonder when/if its going to be on.

Cheers for that - I wanted to make sure that I catch it. I will reserve judgement on Katie Melua until I see it. Although I do agree with all the rest of the comments on this thread that Kirsty is a tough act to follow.

According to the forum on www.pogues.com (where members of the band frequently post, in particular Mr Philip Chevron) the Ross performance has now been filmed and went very well. The Pogues & Katie Melua will also be performing together on CD:UK. Fantastic!!! They are filming it tomorrow (Sat 10th Dec) but I'm not sure if this show still goes out live. Does anyone know?

Agree with everyone who's said this is the best Christmas record ever but then I always loved The Pogues and Kirsty McColl (ever since There's a guy works down the chipshop!)
I hope the re-release does well.
I didn't buy it first or even second time around and think it'd be a great Christmas No 1

I posted this in the other thread about christmas songs, but got no replies.

Are they using Kirsty's vocal in this re-release? Because the below link makes it sound like Kate Moss is doing the vocals on the new re-release

The single is definitely a re-release of the original featuring Kirtsy MacColl. I think some rumours arose because Kate Moss was suggested to join the band on their current tour to sing Kirsty's part, although that is no longer happening either.

Thank You

I was really worried for a second there.

I cant even type the word.

Victoria Newton has a campaign to get it to no1 for Xmas, so I hope it flops.
They bleep the word out when they play this on VH1. As the story of the song is about a male/female relationship, I find it an odd word to use in that context, but don't feel offended by it.

It is one 'Christmas' song which can be played throughout the year as it's not too festive like Slade or Wizard.

I looked it up ages ago & found it can mean 'lump' or 'hag', which would fit in. I think its Irish slang. I personally don't think faggot means homosexual in this song. I wonder if anyone has actually managed to ask whoever wrote the song what they meant by faggot? For all we know, they might have been singing about those meat ball things you get in the freezer of your local supermarket Well anyway, I don't think anyone should go bleeping words out of a song, that's just stupid.

There are also other words (you wouldn't find in a Westlife song or indeed any regular xmas song) in it, like bum, scumbag & arse. If these were all to be bleeped out, there wouldn't be much song left!

This censorship issue is pathetic. The Pogues recently filmed an appearance for the Jonathan Ross Christmas Show (showing Thursday 23rd Dec, 8.00pm, BBC1) and were told they would have to change the lyrics. The band rightly refused and said if the BBC insisted then they wouldn't show up at all. Funnily enough the matter was dropped and the performance went ahead, but it remains to be seen how it will be edited.

Just for the record, anyone who doesn't buy at least one copy of this single next week to get it to number one for Christmas is a scumbag, a maggot and a cheap lousy faggot!!

Happy Christmas yer arse!!

But I saw them on TOTP this Sunday (a recording from 1992) and they changed the words to something like "you're cheap and you're haggard"

Shane & Kirsty are certainly in the top ten though, along with the Waitresses' "Christmas Wrapping," anything from Phil Spector's Christmas LP, Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You," and of course Slade's "Merry Christmas Everybody." But I think one of the main reasons you're supposed to pronounce "Fairytale Of New York" the greatest one ever is that it's the only well-known Christmas song with swearing in it. (Admit it.)

Not at all - It's the only xmas song I know that isn't in any way sentimental. It has that truthfulness of lived experience. The opening words do it for me:

"Christmas Eve in the drunk tank,
An old man turned to me - said he
wouldn't see another one .."

Something like that could really have happened to Shane.

Yes, same here. The 'Fairytale' is one of reality warts and all. Xmas isn't all sparkly white snow.

Yes, that's interesting cos the Pogues had no qualms about changing the words to suit the BBC back then, but now refuse to....

No, I think it's the swearing. Seriously though, I still say it isn't the best one.
