What has happened to Betty in the Street??
I've not seen her for ages
Has she gone on a "round the world cruise" or something and I missed it? I do suspect that the rather large cast in the Street means we see much less of the great characters - like Betty - and much more of the dross like Les She's great is Betty Nearly as funny as Blanche

Betty Driver is quite old so I think they use her very sparingly. Though I am struggling to think when Betty last had a bad scene.
Even when her only contribution is sniffing at someone and walking away |

Betty is one of the best Corrie characters
but she is 85. But still wonderful.

Phyliss Pearce was a lovely lady, 'Ena Sharples with a blue rinse' as Albert Tatlock said.
I was very sad when Jill Summers died.

Phyliss was a great character and I loved her persuit of Percy. I think she was quite different to Ena though. Less miserable all the time.
Don't get me wrong you can't beat Ena, not with a set of pokers, but Phyliss was a warmer person. Apparently they nearly didn't cast Violet Carson as Ena because ITV didn't want to pay for a third class ticket from Blackpool to Manchester. It was Tony Warren who paid for her to come over to audition Thats ITV, never spend what you know someone else will cough up for |

Ena, Minnie
, Elsie and Annie i think top all Corrie characters 10 times over. I can't believe it when people say they think Karen McDonald or somebody is the best character ever. Phyliss was great but Ena was better.

Of course I remember Len - didn't he get sacked in disgrace over some allegation or other? But I can't place Jerry Booth. Please enlighten me.

Please enlighten me. ![]() Ray and Len ran the builders originally and they employed Jerry. He was the sort of stooge to their manly banter. He had a boat in the early 70's which Stan Ogden capsized. He was a nice sort but left and the actor soon died of a heart attack I think it was. Len and Ray were the heart throbs way back when. |

Sorry I meant Jerry. Stand of course fell ill in 1984 and left then. Len, Albert, Elsie (final time) and Stan (maybe Annie as well) all left within two years of each other. Everyone said it would fail because many of its stars left and a young upstart from the EE was blowing viewers away over on Auntie's channel |
