How naive/level-headed/cynical are you....and does it effect your vote?
Just asking as this years X factor seems so staged to me.
I was a bit naive when I first watched reality shows and believed everything that was shown to me..but no longer. And now, this years X-factor seems to be hamming it up more than any other reality show to me! We have had a lot of sympathy pleas (don't get me wrong..it is in the editing..not so much the contestants) , arguments and Judges views..more than we did last year. Watching tonight's 24/7 would have just made me change from naive to cynical completely! ![]() The phone calls with Chennai and Brenda from Louis and Sharon after their 'argument' ...how staged were they! And the 'locking' them in the kitchen to sort it out....doh! The rows with the judges...I was suspicious last year as Sharon and Simon were at loggerheads one week and I went to the NTA's and they sat next to each other and chatted all night..the same with him and Louis last week! I guess my question is..does any of this effect your vote? If Chenai is sad, filmed convieniently coming out of the house to the sounds of Groove Armada...does it make you want to pick up the phone? Or even Andy's situation (and God knows I know how he is feeling) but does that make you want to vote him... Or do you all vote on all round X factor ness...and not the sympathy vote, arguments, judges, or how much space they get in the papers and on TV. It's like politics isn't it! If you like someone who isn't as popular you really have to fight for them! ![]() I just wondered what the rest of you thought. And once again..I am not saying the contestants are milking their various situations...it is in the editing, as all reality shows are, but I just wondered if it effected how you voted. (Apologies for the long post..had a day or two off! )

Bohochick - Sadly, tonights show will not change anything due to the fact that the audience for ITV2 is about 320 viewers. It's all about Saturday night. However it was great to see a real person in the house. So Chenai is a chain-smoking, feisty, sulking, wannabee diva? GOOD. We know nothing about the others who are acting "nice" as though their lives depended on it. Go Chenai.

Actually..if I was to go on tonight...I thought Chenai was not very nice..but like I said it is all in editing..and to be honest, I never wanted Chenai there to start with so how she was portrayed today did not influence my vote..just confirmed I did not want her to stay in.
Sorry.

Good post Bohochick.
The point with Reality TV is that like any piece of drama, the audience make a contract and suspend reality so their able to fully immerse themselves in the dramatic story playing out in front of them. Logically we are all aware of what it takes to produce the drama, actors, directors, script writers/editor etc, but we bury this knowledge so we can enjoy the spectacle. Just enjoy.

I usually pick my favourite from the first live show, and stick to them no matter what. However this series of the X-Factor has changed me into a complete cynic. I used to be Andy all the way - but hearing him change from 'i love my job so if I go home tomorrow, i won't care' to this overconfident beast we are seeing now.
I'm not going to lie and say the editing doesn't affect me, because if I think someone is deliberately being edited to how their character is not - then I will try to save them. Chico was being portrayed as this sleazy man - however on the live shows he is coming across as a really genuine person. Everytime someone gets through to the next round, he's struggling to hide back a smile and is clapping wildly - and always congratulates and comforts people. |

well as someone who watched a lot of big brother this year i know how much editing can go into an hour show.
I dont base my opinions of acts on this 24.7 just like i didnt base my opinion of the bb housemates on a 1 hour show, of course its all edited. |

If someone has a good vocal that I enjoy but is an @rsehole, I can look past that to some extent, it's like Oasis, they can both be @rseholes, but I still love their music.
The problem for me is when I really like the person but they don't cut it vocally, that's hard to defend and ultimately I give up. The sob stories I can do without, but they would neither sway me to or from voting. |

(However much Louis tries to persuade us otherwise! )But if you are new to the reality TV game, which lets face it, we all were at one point, I wonder how much the Chenai and Andy bits would effect you tonight? (It is effect, not affect isn't it? I always get those two in a muddle )I am voting on who I think has the X factor, which is the title of the show after all...but alot of people may not..and I just wondered..out loud..as I often do!

this forum is starting to get like the big brother forum.. which is a shame really as it should IMO just be based on how the acts perform on the Saturday.
Ah well i guess most people do only watch the live show on a sat so it isnt really going to change their opinion on acts. |

In all honesty, I just vote for how good I think they are and what potential I think they've got. For me it's all about whether or not I want to see/hear them perform again, and that's all. That is all that matters, at the end of the day. Performers can argue with the judges, cry, swear, take their shirts off or whatever - that will not affect how I see them. It's how they perform their songs and how they move and how they sound, in short how talented they are in the musical performance and whether or not they have anything new to offer, that I would vote on.

I don't buy into any of it. Never have. Never voted and never will. It's watchable ENTERTAINING tv is all. I watch to be ENTERTAINED. First of all, I think they should leave their problems behind them. I'm not judging them on who is having the hardest time OUTSIDE the show. Yes I sympathise, this one has suffered a bereavement, this one has a sick child, this one has a disability, this one is allergic to whipped cream...but what the ferk has that got to do with the show? Nothing, nada, rien, zip. It's sad, it's tough. But life's sad and life's tough, deal with it, now forget it and ENTERTAIN me. That's why I'm watching. If I want doom and gloom I'll watch the news or Eastenders.
Do I get upset for them when they go out in floods of tears? No. They knew what they were getting themselves into when they signed up. Just kwityerbitchin' and ENTERTAIN me. I watch all the behind the scenes stuff and read all the scandal, then I switch off and I forget it. Does it affect the way I feel about which acts are best? No. I'm pretty cold and clinical in that an act I was all over last week next week might do crap so I'll be ripping them to shreds. It's a tv show and none of them are any more real to me than the characters in any other tv show. |

OT, yes, but very entertaining
![]() The editing on the shows may affect my judgement of the contestants personalities to some extent, but I wouldn't let it affect who I voted for - I do my best to disregard all biased editing and ignore any sympathy pleas. I support Andy because he's an excellent singer, not a bin man. Ditto Chenai, not because she's living in a rough area of Bradford. Ditto JS, not because they've been trying o hard for so long. If I was more cynical I wouldn't vote at all, but I'd say I'm level-headed enough to not allow the editing of the shows to affect my vote. |

I'm afraid my cynicism has totally taken over this year. We are watching a show, where the ultimate prize is to make the winner a multi million pound recording artist, with all the support and backing that takes. After Simon's treatment of Steve post X Factor and the refusal of the record company to let him release anything other than covers, and consequently the slating he has had in the press for something totally out of his control, has made me realise what a total con this programme is. At least with BB the producers are not promising any glittering prizes of fantastic careers afterwards. It makes me wonder, will this year's winner be treated the same, I do believe they will, whoever it is .
I don't have a favourite this year, for me, not one of them has the X Factor, so I'll treat the show as a Saturday night light entertainment programme, but will definitely not be conned into parting with any cash for voting. I am amazed that anybody still votes
