Apart from Week 1 I've been quite impressed by the Saturday night challenges. Considering it's "live" and presenterless they've managed to get quite a bit of action out of the housemates with their tasks with a twist.
Something obviously went very wrong last night. On Friday Davina told us the housemates would be making a "sacrifice" and just before Saturday's show the announcer said that the housemates were facing a major "sacrifice" too, so what was it they expected to happen?
When Alex first read the challenge to himself he thought there would be problems but when he read it to the group they just took it in their stride. First there was the stick that they had to decide on two of them to be up for eviction, second was the carrot that they would see a video of their families in exchange. What the producers thought would happen is that the housemates, so desperate for contact with the outside world, would fight amongst themselves to get the chance to see the videos even if it meant the "sacrifice" of of facing the public for eviction. Unfortunately this never sank in with the housemates at the time. Later last night Tim said he wished he could have turned back the clock a few hours so he could have volunteered to put himself up for eviction because after seeing the others videos he desperately wanted to see the one done for him.
I bet there will be a serious post-mortem amongst the production team this week as to how their little wheeze went so spectacularly wrong, because not only have we had a bit of a wash out on the Saturday show but we have also lost the penultimate set of nominations and two of the weeks highlights, seeing who's nominated on Tuesday, and the evictees response to who nominated them on Friday.
Poor show all round.
