Why pay for Vonage, when for nothing other than a €5 initial top up you can get unlimited UK calls to landlines and several other countries for no other charges.

my brotherinlaw uses it - the only downside is that the call quality is sometimes not perfect. but it's not bad either.

It's just that it is £10 per month, when with www.sipdiscount.com after the initial €5 it's nothing per month and free unlimited calls to the UK and other countries. Granted it might not last forever, their sister service www.voipbuster.com ran free calls to the UK for 7 months.

I use SIP Discount and Sipgate, Sipgate give you for no monthly fee an incoming number, you can call other Sipgate and some other VoIP provider users for free and call free phone numbers, and then other phones for a small cost, though not needed whilst also using SIP Discount.

call1899.com offer free Voip calls to all uk landlines aswell as 3p connection and then free to UK landlines on your normal BT/TW/NTL line.

I use them and have had no problems and it has serioulsy reduced my (or should I say my other halfs!) phone bill.

They used to many months back, however they seem now to charge 1p/min on VoIP calls, unless this has changed again over the last couple of days.

Yes, Vonage is £10 per month, but for your money you get a router with which you can use ANY existing phone to make your calls, meaning you don't have to site at your PC with a mic and speakers or headset. FAR better

My router (PAP2) is the same one that Vonage ship. You can get it for between £20 and £40, and then use it with Sipgate which works out better than Vonage. Free phone service to use with your normal phone, including voicemail, incoming local phone number...

Got vonage now for 2 weeks and its very good value for money. Did look into sipgate but decided on vonage because of the free router and been able to get through to 999 through there call centre.

Who's sitting at a PC with headphones and a microphone. Certainly not me.

I have a Linksys PAP2 ATA, which has two phone lines, which as you say you can connect any phone, which at the moment has one corded phone and two cordless phones connected.

You can use software with Sipgate and SIP Discount, but I'm not, I am happy to use my regular phones on my ATA without the need of the PC being on.

I am paying ZERO pounds per month and ZERO pence for calls, I am using a standard phone, and I don't need my PC to be on.

FAR FAR better I would say.

You pay your £10 per month. I'll stick with paying ZERO per month and ZERO for calls.

The PAP2 isn't a router, it's just an ATA (analogue telephone adaptor) you connect this to your router, so yes you can use this in addition to your current (vonage locked) router with two built in phone ports.

BexTech. I assume you bought your ATA? How much are they, ou tof interest? I'll bet they're not free, so you've already spent £X for your FREE calls

Yes, I know it will pay for itself eventually, I'm simply making a point. Of course, after the guarantee runs out you'll have to buy another one if it goes faulty. There is something to be said for renting your equiment, which is included in the Vonage deal.

Pros and cons for both

True, I paid £40 for it, but then I bought it so I could try all the services available to me, to me it was just another piece of kit to add to my many interests.

BexTech, could you post the site you bought the Linksys PAP2 from. Was it easy to configure for sipgate? A mate of mine said it’s a bit tricky to connect to sipgate.

Is the Vonage one rented or just bundled free with the package? Telewest offer a free modem with their cable package, as do Plus.Net with theirs (for example).

Plus.Net however won't repair or replace it if it breaks.

www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk

I have the settings for Sipgate and SIP Discount, and also the regional settings for the adaptor if required.

It was really easy to set up with Sipgate, as Sipgate display the settings you require using the interface of your device. For the Linksys PAP2 you just choose Sipura from the Sipgate menu and then display the configuration details.

why really bother with VOIP at all? Unless its 100% free, i've always found that there's a cheaper alternative via discount number!

I do use VoIP Cheap, however you can't use an ATA with it at the moment, only a PC and their software, also you need to make an initial top-up, before you can make free calls.

Their sister service www.voipbuster.com was the 1st to offer free calls to many destinations since over 7 months ago, you can use an ATA with them however they have recently dropped free calls to Australia and the UK.

Their other sister service www.sipdiscount.com allows use of an ATA and also still offer free calls to the UK.

Vonage - was pretty easy to set up, once I abandoned my new but incompatable etherlink Dlink modem. Vonage asked if I'd like to exchange it for an approved model. which wsa excellent.

However, the real bargain for me was that Vonage define the BRITISH ISLES as a call region unlike anyone else that I found.

As my wife has family in Eire, it was great to realise that we could talk for as long as we wished. Its cut their costs of calling us since we call them back without worry. And in theory its even possible to do three way conference calling connecting other relatives WITHOUT a voip service through our phone, thus not costing them a penny. ie - Aunty Mary in scotland and Nana in Eire can talk for free if we call them...
smashing...

the only downer is that my SMS home phone doesnt work on the service but the operator did say he'd pass on the request.

It can call Eire free too, but without any monthly charge either.

Is via a PC to landline?
Or is it via a voip phone which independant of the pc or...?

Because my PC is not always on - I'm pretty happy with the vonage system which is PC independant...

Im new to this - so humour me ;-D

Which ever you want to use, either via softphone on the PC or like myself using an ATA which has my cordless/corded phones attached independent of the PC.
