The other thing that is possible, is that, however many votes are cast, the proportions for each couple aren't actually that different.
If, for example, with 5 couples left, you get 22%, 21%, 20%, 19% and 18% of votes from top to bottom, you would only need a minor fluctuation (sympathy votes etc) to reverse that order. If, on the other hand, the sizes of the fanbases are very different, say 30%, 25%, 20%, 15%, 10%, you would need a much greater fluctuation to influence results.
Based on results so far, I would say that the proportions of people voting for each couple must actually be pretty similar.
