Is that really dancing?

I watched SCD for the first time over the weekend and nearly fell off the sofa laughing when the professionals came on together. What on earth were the men doing? All those manic movements made them look like mincing eels!
I thought it was a joke but is that the way it's done now?
I had to come and ask.
The rest of the show was fun and didn't contain any of the weird moves.

Yea thats they way its done, I've been dancing since I was three and I remember the first time I saw professionals, especially the males and I was like WHAT are they doing! But you get used to it, it's all in the act of it just shows how much confidence they have!

Thanks for replying dancedreamer.
I thought they were having a major show off after drinking six pints of coffee!
Looks quite bizarre if you're not used to it though.

Mincing eels. Fantastic phrase!

Pity it undermines the difficulty of it...but describes it exactly!

The samba is just bizarre full stop - mincing eels is a great phrase though.

All the dances have been fantastic. A lot of the moves, the average person would find impossible to do. They are very talented and hardworking. I love watching the professionals

Glad the comment was taken in fun - I admire their talent but that particular dance had a comedy element for me.
Dancing has certainly changed - last time I watched the women were half naked and all the men were orange!

Yes! The very couple I was thinking of although I'd never have remembered their names.
Thanks!

Samba is getting faster I think... I mean the moves within the dance. It is fashionable at the moment to work with the faster beats more than the traditional 1 a 2. It's more like 1&a2&a at the moment.

compared with a couple of years ago competitive Samba is slower than it was even with the split beats

Awww, Donnie and Gaynor... I feel about 10 now. Come Dancing was the one thing guaranteed to make my dad go out to the pub, so my mother and I could eat ice cream and admire the sequins and the comedy facial expressions.
