When I was a little boy (well, about 18), I was at boarding school, where smoking was about the worst thing you could do, apart from genocide. We got caught smoking behind the bike sheds by one teacher - he hauled me up and handed me a punishment. I didn't feel aggrieved. I got caught. It was a fair cop.

Some time later we were having a sly fag in one of the side streets off the school grounds, and another teacher (let's call him 'Mr. Pudenda') happened by. He said 'Oh don't worry, you're not on the grounds and I don't care anyway'. We even had a nice chat for 5 minutes or so before he went off.

Next morning we were summoned to the Head. 'Mr. Pudenda tells me he caught you smoking!' We never had any respect for Pudenda ever again, and even now, over 20 years later, if I met him in the street, I'd walk right past him with my nose in the air - the pathetic little weasel.

Well you shouldn't have been so silly as to get caught so often.
Not exactly criminal mastermind stuff.
