Help with picture view

Humax arrived today- I've connected it up ok (as far as I can see!!)

I have a problem with the viewing of the channels in that several of them have thick bands down the side of the tv - I've made sure that the av settings are 16:9 but this doesn't cure the problem.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Thanks

Tracey.

I think what is happening is that older programmes, especially some American ones are made with an aspect ratio of 4:3 therefore, unless you alter your TV settings will be diplayed with vertical "bands" down either side. Most TVs allow you to stretch the picture to fit the screen, the only problem with this is that objects are then displayed fatter than normal if the transmission is in 4:3.

Thanks Caoimhghin, didn't think of altering the tv settings Was just getting annoyed that the humax settings were not working. All seems ok now.

Thanks again

Tracey.

Dont now what type of tv you are using, but i had the same probs with my Sony. Look in the menu and take it off auto for aspect ratio and set it 16.9. All the best

On top of all this good advice ... had a similar prob when I first set up. The Humax setting was at 4:3 ex factory!
Go into your 9200 "Menu - Preferences - Display Format" and check the screen ratio is set to 16:9 here also.

Does that exlamation mark denote surprise? Why? The fact is that 4:3 output displays OK on both 4:3 and 16:9 tellies but 16:9 output doesn't display so well on 4:3 and there's still a lot of people with 4:3 sets.

Well, yes Cliff, it did denote surprise. I agree there's a lot of 4:3 boxes still out there, but I wouldn't mind betting that a huge majority of peeps investing ( ) in a PVR will have upgraded their TV to widescreen first. If any forum members have a 9200 and no widescreen I should be very surprised.
I've only had widescreen for 18 months or so, and never had any concerns with how what I assume were 16:9 transmissions appeared/

Barry,

Actually I've read many posts from people with other PVRs (the Fusions that had a "widescreen bug") where they say "oh I don't see the problem but then again I don't have a 16:9 telly".

Next you'll be saying that the folks that buy PVRs are bound to have an HDTV LCD or something "cos that's what I've got".

I think a lot of people end up with a PVR simply cos the old VCR died and the man in the shop said "this'll be a good alternative". I don't think they necessarily are persuaded to splash another 500 notes on a fancy new telly at the same time though (perhaps an extortionate 3 year warranty maybe, but not a new telly)

I think that a 16:9 picture displays very well on a 4:3 TV, better than on a widescreen TV in some cases, there is no stretching or squashing as you see on widescreen.

I can't understand why anyone would would want a widescreen TV less than 32 inches as the picture may be wider but the height is very small, maybe only 12 inches, so for that reason I prefer to watch widescreen pictures on a 4:3 TV.
