Has Big Brother run its course???
Charles U Farly

After the boos and jeers at Adele on Friday, are we all too caught up in the mess that is Big Brother??

At the end of the series, is the only option to give Big Brother a break before things turn nasty? Or should CH4 run another series next year, to cash in while the going's good?

Opinions??

I don't think that BB has run its course. Most people dip into it and take it for what it is - a game show on TV.

The problem is places like this - where every move is treated with over the top reactions - Sack the producers for making the show - Hate the housemates for daring to do or say something some one doens't like. Where everyone that doesn't think like you is stuipd, a sheep or worse.

I guess that its always going to be that way - I for one am going to go back to being a casual observer. The lack of intelligent thought here has finally got to me.

There are intelligent people here BTW - its just that over the weeks their voices are being drowned out by the patomine responses of the majority

When they start getting all contrived with stuff like Heaven and Hell to keep "us" interested, you can only assume the idea is beginning to get old. It's also gone very much more mainstream than C4/advertisers would like (higher viewing figures, but older & poorer people watching). The booing matters very little here nor there, but if there's a BB4 soon it probably shouldn't be the cock up and backtrack show or the format will sink like Survivor.

I'll start with Adele's eviction, it was diabolical, I was totally disgusted. Fair play to the girl..she stayed true to herself and didn't backtrack. That fiasco was carefully orchestrated....Jade had 200 extra fans to cheer in case she came out to a bad reception....given that BB knew Adele was as much disliked, Why did she not have extra support?! The audience were FULL of Jonny fans and Adele haters!! While I really dislike Jade, I wouldn't have wished that ranting mob on her either!!

Back to Adele, there was a deliberate hate campaign last week from CH4 against Adele....Rise, Graham Norton and the biased editing on the ch4 show and website.

Talking of biased editing...I think ch4 have decided Jonny should win....Jonny get's described on the news items as "comical Housemate" or "loveable fireman". Alex gets "part of the scheming duo" or "old housewife" Before everyone attacks me for being an Alex lover...it's true I want him to win, but even if I didn't like him, I'd still be annoyed by the biased editing on the website!! Even Davina's ...Jonny's a people pleaser is that his only crime?!!

My main reason for posting was...the task on Saturday was a total anti-climax!! The envelope said all housemates must remain seated on the couch. Why did BB not tell Tim to sit down when he got up to go get the paper to tear up?! Tho..Jonny's face when he thought Alex had stitched him up was priceless. Chalk white face and sheer panic when he saw his family on the plasma screen, I've never seen anyone more disppointed to see their family!! I thought he was going to drop the kids off there and then on the seat!! (a saying which gets on my nerves!!)LOL

I think Ch4 have shot themselves in the foot with this series, the reason this one was so successful was due to last years. This year has been to cause as much conflict and tension as possible, treat the HM's like children(musical chairs, puppet shows) then they'll act like children...bitching etc. Come next year's series, I doubt if they'll even get the number of viewers the first two series had, as everyone is going to remember how biased and nasty this years series was.

Couldn't agree more. Everyone knows its a game show but now C4 have decided to treat us the public like kids too. At least we believed BB1 and 2 were "genuine" reflections of HM and public opinion. This year its all been dumbed down and through editing etc "we" simply evict who C4 want.:'(

But channel 4 say that they don't try to influence the voting! Channel 4 deny using selective editing! They wouldn't lie to us would they??????

7.1m people watched on Friday night. Last weeks vote was the largest eviction poll in the shows history. C4 and Endemol have signed a four year contract to keep making Big Brother. So BB has far from run it's course the only question is how desperate the gimmicks are going to get in future to keep us entertained.

I can see the press next year: "viewing figures fall to 50%"
(as though 1/2 of 7.1m is bad!)

Will it be a victim of its own success?

As for the 4 year contract, does that mean only 1 more year, or 4 more laborious years of wasting my life watching these wannbe's on telly.... (yes, I know, I don't *have* to watch it...... in the same way that I could stop smoking whenever I want....)

Personally, I think a return to the orginal formula is the only way to ensure success (btw, anyone watching BB3usa: what are they doing out there, task-wise)
Of course, that could be perceived as trying to "re-make" the original series, and also fall flat....

I just don't see where else they can take the format

I think the show has gone downhill. I thinkt he producers aren't as good, and I don't like the location or the studio/walk of shame setup. Last years was much better. If the house in Bow is still standing and the studio they used is free. I think they should re-sign a contract and move all their gear back there. I don't like the Elstree set up at all. In Bow what they used to have was the evictee walking out of the house down the path through the gates and having chances to cuddle and talk to family members and walk accross the river (which was a very good setup IMO) before facignt he crowd and the torrent of cheers/boos and into the studio. What we have this year is out the house, stright into the crowd before they've even come down the stairs and the families are behind bars this year so it's not as easy to have contact with them, and if you've had a torrent of boos you won't feel that much like hugging them anyway.

BB1 had roughly the right age group to partake in the BB game. They were a little bit more mature & had the brains to stop & think before opening their mouths.
BB2 saw the age grouping come down a little bit, but we had the failings of the gobby Narindaaaaargh. Thank god Brian was there with all his wit & humour to carry the show along.
BB3 has the youngest age grouping so far, excluding Sandy. All we've got is a bunch of whinging, whining, back stabbing moaners intent on ruining what should've have been a better BB.
Sit back & ask yourselves, if I were in the BB house, would I be as bitchy & cruel as some of those that are in there have been ?
I know I wouldn't be, but if I was, I'd expect a good slap !
At the end of the day, there's only two things on each HM's mind, a not so big jackpot of £70k & the hope that they've been 'noticed' ..... at any cost.
BB ..... 2000-2002 ..... Killed by Dead-Brains ..... RIP

I was really looking forward to BB3 and have been very disappointed. The age range of the housemates is too narrow and young, but the production values are what really annoy me. I enjoyed watching The HMs work as a team last year to achieve weekly tasks, as there was a structure to how they interacted and no shortage of friction but without boring the pants off the viewer, or giving the contestants too much booze. This year we get such wonderful things as decisions by who picks the longest bit of paper, or who gets to throw a single basket ball, if you actually get a chance to throw at all.

Just my opinion but whatever the current viewing figures are, I certainly haven't watched much of the series and the stupid events of last Saturday mean I won't bust a blood vessel to see the weekly tasks either. Only the remnants of addiction to BB2 are keeping me interested at all, but next year... they will have to come up with a much better production team to get me back.

I think the attempt in the tasks was to "suprise" the HMs, rather than allow them to practise all week. Clearly, the basketball task would have been fairer if everyone had actually gotten a turn. My prefered method would have been a "best of 3 shots" or a sort of mini tournament of matches between the HMs. Ideas??

I agree with most points above.

The task was a disgrace; a fiasco. There was no task element in it whatsoever, it was anticlimatic, a ploy at trying to keep Jade in, and, of course a money grabber.

Big Brother 1 was a novelty show. There was a splendid sense of ignorance and no self-cosciousness in the house. Big Brother 2 carried over most of this sense, though idiots such as Stuart, Narinder et al went in to be famous. Sadly, events such as the following have, for me, spoilt the entire series:

1) Jade signing the BB theme in her sleep
2) Jonny talking about Dermot's show
3) Impersonating the BB narrator

In it's vulnerability and ignorance, BB1 (and, though to a lesser extent BB2) was magical. Big Brother inevitably has lost this sense and has to inject new "novelties"....

in BB2: the "new housemate", a "mid week eviction", a "live nomination in the second week"

however in BB3 we have "live show" "two new housemates" "snap eviction in first week" "heaven and hell" "secret room (unconfirmed" "a 'task' deciding on nominations"........ the list is endless. We have to understand that BB has to do this to evolve and to remain popular. We can expect much much more next year, Saturday prime time evictions, which was a mooted idea this year, probably a live nomination programme, maybe even a BB for couples or something like that........ the same happened with WWTBAM and TWL. The ratings for these two programmes peaked, then with the introduction for celebrity, couples, comedians, actors etc etc the public went off these programmes, leading to the axe (in US now, us soon I would guess)

The ratings have peaked; a sure sign of profit and success for C4. All bubbles do burst, a shelf life is only as long as people are bothered to read, and probably BB4 or BB5 will be the last

I'll leave you with an old saying: familiarity breeds contempt.

I think BB will run for a while actually. Afterall it's now come part of the British summer along with Wimbledon etc etc. I do hope they go back to the original format for next year though. But the greedy bast@rds at C4 will probably sell-out to the masses again and invent another 10,000 different ways to send them 25p via text.

I totally agree with this point. For the last two years I have been a proud BB fan but this year I feel as though I'm some kind of bitchfest vouyer. The lack of mini-tasks in the first few weeks and the lack of team tasks means the HMs are taking the phrase "each to their own" to a totally diffrent level. I kinda enjoyed watching them come together as a group and getting to know one another. I do admit I enjoyed the bitching to a certain extent, PJ knows how to do it right. However, I have been feeling ashamed for being a BB fan these past weeks.

BB is being draged through the gutter. There is a feeling of being led. Perhaps if they got a few producers older than 21 then we'd have a bit of maturity leading the program.
