Rock music was always meant to shock and polarise opinion from it's earliest origins. Elvis and his very active pelvis shocked a good few people in it's time. Frankly I find Brown Sugar's lyrics less offensive than I do the Sugababes latest song and video which is very explicit with overtly sexual images yet the market aimed at is pre-pubescent girls.
I find that Sugababes video offensive too....i can't believe Heidi is getting it on with a bespectacled bloke in a cardi....

I did not indicate that Mick Jagger was for slavery.. I actually think if you read what I said I mentioned the SHOCK factor.. which the Stones were about and I don't think even their fans would dispute that.. They were the total opposite of the Beatles at the time this was written... note I have said at that time, not later, when the Beatles lost the goody two shoes image.

I just do not think this is the song she should be singing ... of all the great rock songs they have picked one I cannot stand which does not help, as I have stated I am not a Stones fan. Apart from which this song once again is SO old.. 1969... I think that was the date of it being written..

I agree. I think it's a bad choice for Maria, regardless of the lyrics. I'm not sure why she wants to sing a rock number anyway as I would have thought her voice leant itself more to soul or R & B. I didn't think Beautiful last week was a good choice either. The Mentors seem to be in a sixties time warp most of the time. I don't know why the contestants don't just choose their own songs.

I think (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction would be an ace song for Maria to sing....

Yes, you mentioned the shock factor, but you also explicitly said Maria shouldn't be singing those lyrics and you indicated that you found the lyrics racist. Personally, I can't see why you're stressing the shock factor. The Stones were only shocking because society was so god-damned repressed in those days. You're basically saying that a song about slavery is shocking purely because it is about sex and drugs and shouldn't be broadcast (you agree with your father turning off the tv), when personally I think it's the slavery that's shocking. I also think it's shocking that Mick Jagger got three months', but your father probably agreed with that sentence.

I think Maria herself chose "Satisfaction", which is also from the 60s.

If you re read my post I said I wasn't sure why Maria wanted to do a rock number as I don't think her voice is suited to it. I know she chose Satisfaction, but I got the impression that the Mentors came up with Brown Sugar and are quite pushy about her doing it instead of Satisfaction, which she was more comfortable with. I don't particularly like either song for her. Someone else came up with Black Velvet on another thread, and I think something like that would be better for her if she wants to do a rock number.

CAn you please indicate where I ONCE used the word racism please...

My father was right to turn it off.. it was his house we lived by his rules I was what 8 maybe. He would do alot more now I am sure he would throw the TV out the window at some of the dire videos on the music channels.. he was born to parents of the Victorian times..

No where in this song does it emphasise slavery was wrong OR did I miss a line. Any form of slavery is wrong and it is still going on all around the world.. I should know I belong to a society trying to fight it. Next you will be telling me it is okay to sing about terrorism and NOT indicate in the song it is wrong..

I did not like the Rolliing Stones I have said that.. I liked many other rock bands though and still do, but that is a matter of opinion, mine was Mick Jagger had a voice that grated on me.

Yes I mis-read your post, sorry!, which is why I'd amended it before you posted your reply. You said the mentors were stuck in a '60s time warp, and I was just pointing out that Maria wanted to do a song from that era. I don't think she's that pushed around by her mentors.

Calm down. I know you didn't use the word 'racism'; by 'indicated' I meant I thought you implied the song was racist. You jusy sound a little too easily shocked for my taste, sorry.

I think then you are mis reading many posts as you will not find one post here where I have mentioned racism.. it never entered my head.. it is the slavery that I mentioned. I also said it was old.. very old it was penned in 1969.. I am not saying old songs should not be covered as for me many should but I could have found many more songs that would have suited a lady I warmed to over the last two weeks.. I cannot see that happening this week.. for me WRONG song.

I will reply as it looks like we posted at the same time.. there is little that shocks me that I can say... having got two grown up kids, I have lived the drama of drugs etc.. racism does not even spring to mind from this song.. although I guess it could be construed that way .. I felt Maria was looking for someone ANYONE to say sing the other song to be honest.

If an act is not comfortable singing a song you get a Philip scenario.. the lad can sing he has a lovely voice he was DIRE two weeks with bad song choices for him.. I would hate to see Maria go out just because he O camp want her to be different.. yes we want to see verstatile, but not take the artist totally away from what they are and can be. They did not like Satisfaction as they said it had little to it, no highs and lows.. oddly of the two I prefer Satisfaction and it is a WELL know song as well.

The only thing I would say is that the guy with the beard was saying that she'd argued with them about every song that she'd sung so far, which gave me the impression that the mentor's either came up with the songs or make the final decision. I agree that she's a strong woman and if she really didn't want to do something she wouldn't, but I remember when Shayne wanted to do the Darkness song and Louis made him do Summer of 69 instead. The Judges do seem to have a lot of arguments about poor song choices as well.

I would dispute that, The Stones were not really interested in shocking people - or rather it wasn't of interest to them.. when the Stones first came out their manager Andrew Loog Oldham realised that their was excellent marketing potential in showing the Stones as the evil flip side to the Beatles, the truth was they were pretty much into the same things and got up to the same things, it was all smoke & mirrors, at the time of writing Brown Sugar in '69, Paul Mc had already admitted to taking LSD and both groups were held in high disdain by the "establishment"

You're probably right about Shayne - I think he is more easily swayed. I saw that bit about Mark saying Maria had argued with them about every song she'd sung; I assumed that meant she had challenged the choice but agreed in the end to give it a go. I think the scenario this week was Maria wanted to do a rock song, she suggested 'Satisfaction' and the mentors countered with 'Brown Sugar'. The mentors are there to provide professional guidance and might often be right, but obviously the act has to agree in the end.

A song can be taken in one context when one person sings it, and in a totally different context when another person sings it.
Just because the song at the time it was written contains references to drug taking etc, it doesn't mean that someone else couldn't sing it and portray it in a whole new light...

But two weeks ago, when Philip was evicted, he sung a song ('Johnny Be Good') that he alone had chosen (he and Louis had an argument about it)!!

The contestants can't win ... the judges pick them a bad song and they go along with it, they get slated.

Louis picks a bad song (or indeed songs) - and according to Louis it's not about the song it's about the performance.
Simon picks a bad song and Louis jumps up and down and says that was a bad song choice - your act is going home because of you!

People don't get evicted purely because of a bad song choice. Maybe for the first week or two when the audience is getting to know them, but at this stage it would only matter if people hadn't built up enough goodwill for an act. In the papers today the Conways's dad said if they had suitable songs they could win it. If only it was that easy. But that is going off the subject of this thread, so I will leave it there.

I saw Maria performing live with her band Skye back in July and the stuff she does definately has a rock edge (she's a pretty good guitarist)...plus, just cos it's a 'rock' song doesn't mean she can't put her own spin of it....imo the sign of a good song and a good artist is when the track can be performed well in a style suiting the artists voice.

I agree completely. Personally, the fact that Maria wants to do a rock song and is into that sort of music makes her much more interesting to me.

Yes and when Philip sang week 3 we saw closer to him than we had before. and I happen to think Louis had eyes only on SHAYNE.. for me he was totally wrong.... and I think you have to consider what would you buy by these people.. what genre do you actually think they are.. maria has a lovely voice lets hope she sails it then.. but for me it is still the wrong song.

AND hey as a Beatle fan from a child there is little you can tell me about them, their drug taking etc.. their arrests.. their huge appeal in the States.. they took music further in those days than any other artist at the time EVEN the Stones could not match their appeal.

I agree with you there, but I'm still not sure about the song.
Its not my favourite Stones song and can't remember anyone else covering it. If Maria can carry it off, fair play to her, but she is going to be at the mercy of whatever arrangement they come up with as well. I wish her luck as I'd like to see her in the final.

I used to cover it in my old band probably best forgotten though
