Dodgy calls (Motorolla v500)

Don't know if anyone can help, but in the last few days, whenever people call my mobile from theirs, I answer it, yet hear nothing but faint 'electronic sounds' (I suppose a bit like when a modem dials up) and the person calling me doesn't hear anything either. At first I thought it was a prank, but doesn't seem like it.

I called my mobile on from my BT landline, and heard all OK, both ends.

My mobile is a Motorolla v500 (crap, I know), with Orange (again, crap, I know) PAYG.

Any thoughts/help is most appreciated.

Can't help but I had the same thing at work today. Each time I picked the phone up I kept getting these electronic noises and no answer from the other end. Happened about eight times at least.
