DHD4000 HDD Upgrade Problem
soopahfly
10-11-2005
I've had the HDD upgraded in my DHD for quite some time now and never really took advantage of the space. All I tended to do was record top gear on a sunday.

Today I decided to do something about the noise of the unit, so I downloaded HUtil to go with the 120gb Samsung spinpoint HDD thats in there. I did a full lowlevel format and set the drive's acoustic to Quiet. When I put it back in the freeview box I decided to try and test how much I could record.

So I set up a 24hr recording and it said "Insufficient space for this recording"

This HDD is blank, and doesn't look like it has the 32gb cap. Its detected as a full 120gb drive in the PC's bios and in HUtil.

With no recordings scheduled its disk status is 89% Which I'm guessing is the same as the original 40gb drive.

This drive is at least 4 years old, and has been used in my xbox before being used in the DHD, and the firmware is the same it rolled out the factory with.

Help!!!

There might be something a bit glitchy about setting a '24 hour recording' (unless you've successfully done this before, that is). The "89%" might be a firmware glitch too, since it wouldn't be expecting 120 GB to play with.

Why don't you try something simple, like setting a recording of a couple of hours?

I've just added a 6 hour recording, and the yellow bar is at around 50%. Trying to add a further 8 hours results in the same message.

Are you sure about the 32GB limit setting? If it has the same jumper arrangement as my SP1604N, then it should be set like this:
: : I : with the IDE cable on the left, and the Molex on the right
That is the third jumper only "on". This gives Cable Select without the 32GB limit.

But, presumably you've been using this HDD for a while and haven't changed the jumper settings? H'mm... I can't see that setting the drive to Quiet should have made that much difference.

With no recordings scheduled the yellow bar should be tiny! Perhaps another format of the drive would be worthwhile? I've successfully used killdisk when trying out various HDDs in the Thomson (although I don't see why HUTIL shouldn't do the job).

The yellow bar is about 3/4 of an inch when the drive is empty. Its always been like this ever since the drive has been fitted. Changing the drive to quiet has made no difference to the size of the bar.

Just double checked the jumpers to how you said, and they are the same.

Running Killdisk on the drive now, and it says "Total Size: 111Gb"

So, that says to me that there is no cap limit on the drive.

Strangly enough, Killdisk has cured the problem :S

Good-o! Don't know why HUTIL shouldn't have done the job, but killdisk really wipes the slate clean!

Enjoy the space...
