Conway Father Deluded?

In today's Mirror the Conway Sisters' father was quoted as saying: "With the right songs, they could win. I don't think the songs they've got suit them."

See:
http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/showbiz...name_page.html

The Wrong Song excuse is certainly a handy one. But if his theory is correct, then using the same argument, surely if the Conways had the right song they could have a hit in Britain without X Factor. They write their own songs, don't they? Obviously such songs aren't good enough to get them recognized in this country without having to go on a TV talent comp.

The truth of the matter, in my opinion, is that the Conway Sisters are not going to win for lots of reasons. In no particular order:

a) they aren't very attractive - successful girl groups are almost always sexy and/or feisty. They've been compared to The Corrs but let's face it - the Corrs were well known for being beauties as well as their music

b) their sound just isn't funky (and therefore modern) enough

c) they've done a bit too much complaining now to endear themselves enough.

I am not fond of the Conway Sisters and I doubt they can win. However, it is sweet and very nice that their dad sticks up for them like that.

Just going from the old heart there.

That is the main problem for me. The sum of the four voices don't match the songs that we have heard so far. Some posters have been unkind about the TONE of the voices but they could have a future in a folk/country/roots genre. It is probably a shame for them that the surge of interest in Country Music that we saw a couple of years ago seems to have fizzled out but that is a whole different subject....!

I suppose it's sweet. I'm a parent myself and of course I would stick up for my child, but not by saying something idiotic like that. That's just bog standard clueless parent fare, and I think my child deserves a more honest and considered defence (and opinion - a parent should be able to give constructive criticism). I would have a lot more respect for them if they took a long hard look at themselves and took some responsibility - they were singing the song afterall - instead of coming up with excuses. Next we're going to have the 'it's hard for a girl group' excuse.

I do see your point, but isn't that the same for everyone? If they were that good and really wanted to make it, wouldn't they already have done so?

True...I am not a parent so do not know what I would do. But I imagine if my kids were in a TV competition I would back them to the hilt whatever? I would my nephews, if that counts.

I may well tell them the truth off 'camera'..but on 'camera'? If you can't depend on your family and friends who can you depend on? I mean, if your family are telling the UK you can't sing, they would have no hope of staying in with the rest of us surely?

I'm sorry, but everytime I glance at the title of this thread I'm reading it as "Father Conway Deluded".

A thread about a wayward priest?

Standard cop out - nothing to see - move along now people!

If only I had a good voice, the right song, lots of money and stunning sex appeal... I could be the next Robbie Williams.
...and then reality kicks in

What do you want him to say?

"My girls are so deluded, why are they even there?"

"Obviously they won't win but we want the suckers, who'll waste money voting them through each week, to believe they can."

"I'm their dad but even I know they can't win!" (most truthful)

If I was Simon I would say to the Harpies " You obviously don't like the songs I'm giving you, so from now you choose your own" Then he can Piss himself laughing when they get voted off

To be fair Simon's song choices for the Conway Sisters has been dreadful and then he has the nerve to say to Louis that his choices are dated.
I certainly do not think Simon has done them any favours.

SO why are they not singing one of their own songs... if they are SO good. Well lets face it, this is on an album that has been remastered or whatever you call it.. this is NOT live I bet they would sound nothing like this live .... so sorry YES I have listened to this MISS YOU.. and wonder why are they on this show, they have supported Westlife got an album had a top 20 single and they need a show like this... and then when they manage to get on it they are singing so badly every week that I wonder why they are still there.

As I parent maybe he should have told them years ago to try another career... as this one is not going to work for them.

I think the Conways had a number 1 single in Ireland.
Absolutely

Its only natural and normal for a dad to support his children.

NOW are you kidding me.. if they had a number ONE then they should NOT in my opinion be in the show.. and in it singing so badly come to that.

Spot on GG, This show should be a showcase for new acts, not those that have already released songs, as you say especially when they are that bad

Frankly when they come on its a good time to get up and refill the wine glass. I truely think they are awful. Not a shred of talent between them and the only reason they are still here frankly is because acts that were worse have now gone (ie Chenai and OPhillip.) They are up against the stiff competition of Maria and Shayne and I'm afraid in my opinion they just can't hold there own.

Having a No1 in Ireland and having a number 1 in the UK are 2 very different things in terms of sales & exposure.. it does mean though that they must be pretty popular in Ireland and obviously shows where most of their votes come from.. as if we didn't already know..

AN HONEST one.. and I know several.. ones who see their kids want a dream that is unattainable .. that they are not going to get.. and be honest THEY are not going to win this NO matter what they sing. They are popular in Sligo.. they have the Irish Votes.. they can't last out on that much longer I fear, each week someone goes and this week I have a feeling they will be bottom 2.. it is just who else is there as to who goes home ... as I think we are in for a shock week... and NO I dont think it will be Chico or Nicholas with them...

I think it is sad that the Conways have spent a fortune or their FATHER has on making an album.. they could be great song writers and earn mega bucks that way but as singers for me they would be lucky to get on a cruise ship.
