X Factor Chico To Sing Tribute To Sick Pal
November 11, 2005, 1:22:43

X-Factor favourite Chico is planning to sing a tribute to his seriously ill friend on Saturday's show (12.11.05).

The former stripper usually performs light, dance numbers, but says he will sing Enrique Iglesias ballad ‘Hero' for pal Janice O'Halloran, who is battling stomach cancer.

O'Halloran - the singer's former boss - has been fighting the disease for several years.

A show insider is quoted in Britain's The Sun newspaper as saying; "Chico is really nervous. This song means lot to him - he is singing it for Janice to cheer her up. He wants to give this performance his all. He knows he has a lot to prove."

Chico, who is known for peeling off his clothes and substituting his own lyrics to songs, will even ditch his usual antics for the performance.

The source revealed: "There will be no saucy antics - just Chico trying to show that he has a good voice. It's bound to leave the viewers in tears."

This sounds to me like the typical Sharon Osbourne trick of trying to get viewer sympathy. Remember last year when we had to look at Tabby's baby every week, just to prove what a sincere guy he is? And last week she had to mention Andy's bereavement, even though he'd been very quiet and dignified about it himself.

Oh dear I thought it would get this response.. but I think he is genuine and he did not give this away on 24/7 in fact he intrigued me as he did not say who it was for.. bloody papers have to nose around and make it look like a sympathy thing.. which I don't think it is.

So why is this "source" saying "it's bound to leave the viewers in tears"? Not thinking about votes at all, obviously.

Let's just assume for a moment that this is his true motive for performing this song.....why does the whole country need to know about it first? Surely a word or two on the night would suffice.....

Or no words at all, as presumably his friend Janice already knows the song is dedicated to her.

Yep, I'm afraid it reeks of 'cheap trick' to me too.

It's not Chico himself that gave this story to the press so i think it's a cheap trick on the part of the program makers....perhaps even Chico is not happy about this story being told to one and all? Who knows?

We'll know if he walks off the show and refuses to perform because his personal integrity is more important than a spot of publicity that just might keep him in the competition for another week.

No... didn't think so.

Why would he do that over such a small issue? I wouldn't want to sacrifice my chance of being on TV every week over that! Doesn't mean he's necessarily happy about it....

You are right, of course. It would be unrealistic to expect him to walk out over this but, if he really is unhappy about this press release, he will refuse to say on the show that he is singing 'Hero' for his friend who has cancer.

Puhlease!! Pass the sick bucket. I've gone right off Chico now, Sharon Osbourne tactics or not (and how did she find out about this if not from Chico himself) this is really scraping the bottom of the barrel as far as sympathy bvote fishing goes.

What's a bit odd is that the British public aren't daft. This program has been accused of trying to gain 'sympathy votes' for contestants in the past so why release this story knowing it could do Chico/the program more harm than good.....

It's a shame that we have all become so cynical that Chico can't dedicate this song to a sick friend without it being seen as a publicity stunt....there is always the possibility that this is a genuine gesture....stupid to put it in the news though....

If Chico wanted to dedicate the song to a sick friend what was wrong with him saying so AFTER the performance on Saturday? I'm sorry but this reeks of heartstring tugging and emotional manipulation of the worst kind. Come back Chenai and your poor deprived brothers all is forgiven.

If you are so disgusted by Chico or the program., why do you watch it/him? or like to talk about him so much?

Good on him for dedicating the song to whoever he wants.

We are just debating whether or not this is a cheap publicity stunt...

maybe Chico just wants to sing a (frankly, quite awful) 'ballad' for a sick friend in the hope it will cheer her up
If I was her, I'd be more cheered up by Chico taking his clothes off, but you know that's just me
I think it is nice of Chico to do this, regardless of why he did it, or the outcome

Sorry, wasn't the reply I was expecting to read as I scrolled down. Thanks for the laugh

Anyway, I hope Chico can pull it off and doesn't go out this week.
