Oh how sad
My dad had Alzheimer's and it's a terribly tragic illness, both for the sufferer and the family.

I think in some ways, yes it will affect us, as things do when you've experienced them for yourself in the real world. It won't stop me watching Coronation street, if that's the best way to sum things up.
I think the writers will do it well though, and by that, in a sensitive manner.
Poor 'Mike'.
Like his character, my Dad was a very strong independent man and it was heart breaking to see him change with the illness.

I really am in two minds about this storyline.

On one hand Altzheimers is a terrible way for people to end their life , and aslo for the family who have to become the primary carer for usually a person who has always cared for them. A very sad illness in deed and one that does need to be brought more to the forefront.

On the other hand , with no disrespect to people who are dealing with Alzheimers , after all of these years it will be so sad to see the character Mike leave in this way , it would have been nice just to see him retire off to Spain.

But then I suppose that is the point , in real life that is what people have to deal with , they have no choices.

I just hope Corrie handle it well , and dont rush the storyline through too quickly , if they are going to do it the they must do it justice. And I am sure they will.

This sounds so sad. I'm glad they will be giving the character of Mike a huge send off. I'm really looking forward to this plot - even though it will be extremely sad.

There have been too many Alzheimers stories in Corrie. Even the "fake" one with Audrey and Richard making her out to be losing her focus on reality.

I dont particularly like them as they tend to be very "caricatured" in their portrayal and it irritates the viewing public who have lived with Alzheimers in the family for years.

I hope this portrayal is going to be true to life and not going to alienate any viewers this time round as the Audrey story line was very upsetting even though it was fake. It was so bad,I could not watch it.

Yes, I think he will put 100% into it as well. I like his character, even if he has been a bit of a 'rogue'.
I remember the fight scene between him and Ken Barlow over Deirdre too!
oh dear!

I think this is going to be an amazing storyline. It will highlight the terrible plights of this tragic disease and will no doubt be very hard but also gripping to watch.
Corrie are good at these sort of things and I think they will be able to pull it off.

But I have a question - does Mike Baldwin end up dying? Or does he just leave Weatherfield to get the help he needs? (Obviously answer this using spoiler tags!)

This is the kind of storyline Corrie should be going for, not Mad Maya's and Dev getting everyone pregnant.

Why do you keep dragging up old threads?

Mike Baldwin died in April 2006.
