What has arrogance got to do with it?

I keep seeing a lot of post along the lines of "Z is so arrogant" or "Y is so cocky, he/she is so sure he/she's going to win".

Am I the only one who doesn't see any relevance to the "talent show" ?

I'd be interested to hear opinions.

Totally agree with you. It's getting on my nerves because it seems to be the same person it is directed at each time, and I don't see it myself. Just confidence and joy.

well if someone is arrogant it makes them unappealing.
THere is such a thing as over confidence and if they are cocky now i wonder what they would be like if they actualy won
I never likedmaria much but she was so gracious tonight i respect her a lot more than i did.

maybe its more to do with having a likeable personality which is part of the package...so i spose if sum1 cums accross as arrogant they may not be so likeable? im guessing this anyway

Yep I totally agree with you. Robbie is as arrogant as hell when he performs - it doesn't detract from his record sales.

It should be the performance that counts.

why are we like this though? only feeling respect for someone when they'v lost?? If you thought she had talent why not share her joy those times she got through??

What's wrong with being happy and celebrate in winning and why all of us have double standards?

Sometimes I hate being a human being. *sigh*

Agreed - She didn't have a lot of support on here did she?
I read a lot of posts saying she wasn't anything special and should be in the bottom two this week, which surprised me as I thought she was more talented than most of them, and good looking as well. - Still, on the plus side, she might get a career out of it like Lemar and be even more successful in the long run.

Believe me, if any of the performers on X-Factor came within a cat's whisker of being as good as Robbie Williams, I wouldn't care if they were arrogant either! Trouble is they aren't (yet) that good, so they should have a bit of humility.

But what didn't you like about her? I never saw her being cocky or up herself. She always came over exactly as she did tonight when she lost, so why did so many people on here dislike her?

i never found her cocky i just found her performances bland as she didnt show much emotion.
and i didnt see much of her personality.

However i still think she is 10 times better than the conways and i was shocked tonight.

I was hoping someone would bring up Robbie
For him it seems his arrogance comes across as another side of his personality that we all love as part of the package. ... Well... Those that like him anyway.

But susie makes a good point I suppose. He's earned the right to be arrogant because he's a star, and a proven one at that.
Although when you look at those, in this show, that appear confident and then look at those around them, you can understand where the confidence is coming from eh?

Part of the reason this topic has a special interest for me is that I was once turned down after an interview for an IT Contract because I came across in the interview as "too confident".
I was gob smacked.
Hold on... I know I can do this job, and I know I can do it well, but you won't give me the contract because you're concerned that I know I can do it.

Well my sister's just been dismissed from a job as a PA after two weeks for being "too much of a lady"! It takes all sorts I suppose.

As far as Maria goes, I didn't like her generally. I didn't like her voice (too samey), I didn't like her performance (too repetitive), I didn't like her style (I didn't think she was particularly pretty - though her eyes had been beautifully made-up this last week - and there was an element of mutton dressed as lamb) and I didn't like her personality (what there was of it). That's not to say I hate her or wish her any harm but taking all those things into consideration, I wasn't likely to vote for her, want or expect her to win, buy her records or be grief-stricken at her leaving the contest.

thats madness.... u go into an interview to sell yourself and u attempt to appear confident wether u really are or not.... how difficult is it making things if u have to then concern urself on wether ur being confident enough, but not TOO confident! madness!

A lot of the time so called 'arrogance' is really not that. It is self belief.

If you don't believe in yourself and your ability (or what you perceive as ability) then that is going to show in the way you perform.

It can take a lot of guts to go out on stage in front of a large audience. If you don't believe in yourself, then neither will they.

Yes, good post. A certain amount of 'arrogance' is found in most successfull acts. You have to have belief in yourself, which can come across as arrogant, to get anywhere in the music profession, otherwise you'll not be noticed and you'll not get the breaks needed, because you have'nt pushed for them.

Show me someone who can get up and perform on stage without arrogance! It's just not going to happen.

I don't think it's a case of all performers are arrogant. There is a very thin line between confidence and arrogance, but it is a thin line that IMO no one has crossed this year SO FAR!! Chico WAS arrogant but since the live shows started he has changed. Believe me this does NOT mean I like him in the slightest!!! xxxxx

So far I have not watched anyone on the show who's come across as arrogant. I think it's very easy to misintepret someone when you don't know them. For instance, I saw posts calling Shayne arrogant but (and I could be wrong here) what I saw was someone who reacted jubilantly because, he didn't know whether he was going to get through. If he did, then perhaps he would have taken it more in his stride and acted nonchalantly. For all I know, he could have been wondering, 'Is it my turn this week?', and when his name was called out, he couldn't contain his relief and happiness.

So often contestants who I see as merely happy, confident etc. are called arrogant and it seems to me that what some may call arrogant, I interpret as confident - it's a positive as opposed to a negative interpretation.

Well said, I too find it amazing that people are willing to put the boot into contestants because they are happy to have beeen chosen and believe in their ability.

I'd agree with that, in terms of performance, but I guess the difference is that we don't see Robbie backstage immediately after the performance/have a 'reality show' accompanying the performance. I'd say that the X Factor is deliberately set up to make people make a dual judgement based on both performance and personality.

Having said that I can't say that I think any of the contestants are particularly arrogant. Some of them can come across as a bit moody, but I've always put that down to nerves!
