Call me cynical!
Call me cynical but the X-Factor is not about talent, it is not about the under 25, the 25 and over or even the groups, it is not about Louis or Sharon. No my friends it about none of the above.
IT IS ABOUT MONEY AND RATINGS You see, the CD sales by the eventual winner will be small, very small in compression to the callers revenue, advertising revenue, ratings and touring receipts to the show itself. The concept which done fairly (evidence over the previous weeks that the results show otherwise) could very well work but consider the evidence that this particular show never had this in mind. The result is not up to the public, the format of the show draw the viewer into thinking that it is them who have control when in fact: a. Viewers who call to register a vote, this revenue is approx. £0.25 per call or text times amount of calls (on last week 1million) = £250,000.00. b. Advertising space costs that the network auction for this time slot are the most expensive for any other channel or time slot. Whosoever the public fail to vote for: a. The judges use their 1 minute each to suggest in ever so clever ways that a particular act should be in the bottom two. If you look at pervious shows one cant fail to notice. b. Which ever act is in the bottom two the judges have ultimate decision on who to wave goodbye to, leaving them in control AND NOT THE VIEWERS. This theory can be debunked and using the following as an example, MARIA being voted to leave. My response to this is that with a lot of talent in this season compared to 2004 that this was merely a ploy to rouse media interest. Knowing full well that without MARIA (even with her talent) the show would not suffer. This is all well and good but, personally this show is breaking some advertising rules i.e. we are constantly told that Its up to you, who goes you decide etc, vote for me etc. giving us the belief that we are in control of this so called experiment when it is quite the other. Now I have no problem with the above concept as long as the viewers informed as such. I could go on and on and on about this (if any else would like to hear email me at mattmathius@hotmail.com). I would like to know if you agree or disagree and please let us know why. ThGrim |

I know someone who was in the first few rounds, and he said there were some seriously good people auditioning - who never got past the producers to be seen by the judges. Most of them were music students or in the industry already. The average X Factor viewer wants contestants he/she can relate to - not some privileged music student who has natural talent and no particular story to tell. Maria got through because she had the wedding story to detract from the fact that she's already signed up with Peermusic as a songwriter. Once her wedding was past, she just wasn't ordinary enough for the British Public to take her to its heart. They want to see an underdog ("one of us") start to bloom during the series. A winner who will 100% belong to the show and its audience. Someone like Chico, who'll be more than thrilled to pirouette and attention-whore his way through to the finals. Or Andy....gently crooning his way out of the waste disposal industry. Think of every top female vocalist you can. I bet you not a single one of them would have stood a chance of winning a competition like the X Factor when they were starting out. You'll never see a genuine A List star emerge from this show, because the producers and the British public just wouldn't stand for it. |

"Y'know, Jamelia - you need to connect more with the audience. Nice voice, but I'm not convinced the public are warming to you. Also, I'm not sure that 'Locomotion' was the best choice of songs for you." Meanwhile, on X Factor forums...."Jamelia? Totally out of tune. Murdered a classic tune. Deserved to go this week." |

Sharron : "Elvis, you are too thin and skeletal for the Xfactor. Try to eat some burgers and stop dancing like a fool. This show is about singing. And no one is wearing spangly jump suits it'll never take off."
Louis: "Are your family originally from Ireland?" Elvis: "No sir, Scotland" Louis: "I vote for the Conway Sisters as Elvis doesn't have the vocals and I have a warm feeling between my legs" |

IT IS ABOUT MONEY AND RATINGS If you have such an issue with it then don't watch it. Its only a TV show at the end of the day and although false hope is often given to the contestants - they do at least get five minutes of fame and earn some money from it - a chance they would never have got under normal circumstances.

IT IS ABOUT MONEY AND RATINGS All that time I've wasted believing that the judges have integrity, and that their first and only concern is that the most talented act should go on to become a multi millionaire and a world reknowned artist. You mean that'snot going to happen?

Sharon re Daniel Powter who has just sung his new single on Sunday nights Top of the Pops. "I would have voted him out because he doesn't smile enough!"

ThGrim Good post, but I suspect for most of us you are preaching to the converted, I haven't voted for a pop idol or x factor since Will Young and I won't be starting it again. I enjoy the entertainment but don't fool myself that I can make a difference. |
