Floating Voters
I must admit I am suprised at all the outrage that is being spouted on this site with regards to the decision that Louis made on Saturday night. I thought everyone knew by now that this isn't really a bona fide talent contest anymore and is much more about ratings & revenue..
For those of us that don't think its all a massive fix / conspiracy and think that Maria was in the bottom 2 simply because not enough people voted for her I have a theory: On DS i think we get a slightly distorted vision of how people actually vote for the acts, I think that a lot of people who vote are "floating voters" in that they haven't got a real favorite that they will vote for regardless of performance, more they vote for whichever act impressed them most on any given night. I feel the reason for Maria's lack of votes was the song that she sang - months ago I made a comment on here that Maria was a potential finalist based on her rendition of Sam Browns "Stop" this was a song that suited her and was contemporay due to Jamillia's recent cover of it.. Why did she not sing more songs like this?? Brown Sugar alienated the younger voters who weren't familier with the song and alienated some of the older voters for whom Maria's version of it did not gel. Add to that the footage of her saying that she didn't really know the song and she was on to a loser.. how can you believe in a performer if they don't believe in the song they are performing..?? |

Yes, I was amazed at that too. How many times did she listen to the original? The Yeah, yeah, yeah whoooooo! at the end of the song was all wrong and you just can't mess with something that is so ingrained in our memories. |

I agree with both of you. It was a poor choice of song for so many reasons, inappropriate lyrics, wrong style for her and SHE DIDN'T KNOW IT!! When you only have a week,(less than that if you can't make up your mind what to sing) to rehearse, why on earth choose a song that the artist is not familiar with?? Making life difficult, surely?!
I also think that they have tried to develop Maria in a direction she is not comfortable with. She shouldn't be singing white rock/power ballads. In the first couple of weeks she came across as younger, sweeter and much more contemporary. Jamelia type songs would have been much more appropriate. I think Team Osbourne was trying to differentiate between Brenda and Maria so as not to split their votes, Brenda got the soul diva ticket and Maria the rock chick. But there's enough feisty soul music of different styles out there for both of them. Brenda is looking good these days though. With her weight loss, she's taken a good few years off and probably there ultimately wasn't room for both her and Maria in the show. I don't think Maria deserved to go before The Conways, Nicholas or Chico, but she didn't have her best week this week and I don't think she was improving. |

I've been a floating 'viewer' - I don't vote because I need my 35p more than the X Factor producers do - since the start and have wavered between several acts. Up there have been Andy, Brenda, Journey South, Maria and once or twice Shayne but let me say NO ONE has really leapt out and grabbed me this year to the extent I've even been tempted to pick up my phone, unlike last year when several times I did break my own rule and vote for acts that impressed me on a given night. Maybe someone will get to me enough to think they are worth 35p of my money in the coming weeks but right now I find that doubtful.
