Given that it was clear that his mum and dad speak perfectly normally (well, normal for southerners anyway ) why does Nicholas speak with that weird accent?

I dont know if its supposed to be 'street' or what but its very bizarre.

Do kids teach themselves to speak like halfwits these days?

Most young men in the South East talk just like Nicholas.

It's evolution of language. Don't fight it, you'll loose.

This has been discussed on another thread.

He sounds like a cross between Ali G and Catherine Tate's Lauren.

Unfortunately many young people in London, particularly north and north-west London speak like this these days, whatever their parents' nationality or race.

It's street patois / street talk /urban talk, all the kids now speak like this especailly in London. It's all part of the ''Blinglish'' epidemic which is sweeping the nation.
Go to any school or any town / city centre and most of the kids whatever their colour or social background will be speaking like Nicholas whilst sporting a Von Dutch cap, Evisu jeans (which cost 200 pounds ) and Timberland boots. It's all part of ''street culture''.

I worked in London for a while (I am a northerner though, thank god) and I noticed the same with the youngsters. At first I thought it was an accent of immigrants children, who'd been brought up by people who spoke english with a foreign accent but were native english speakers themselves, but then young white londoners often sound like that too.
At least northerners still sound like they always did!

I'm in the south east - about an hour from London, and my 16 year old son and his mates certainly don't talk like that -
in fact they take the p**s out of anyone who does, so not all the kids speak like that. Neither do they dress in £200 jeans - twenty quid jeans from The Officers Club do them -

Mark you, they are all into Zebrahead, Greenday, Feeder and the like - and think r'n'b is cack - so I think it's more a fashionable way of talking to prove you're part of a social group.

My son and his mates all mutter and mumble while playing their thrash metal really loud - so you can't understand them either.........

Thankfully, most of them really dont talk like that. It is getting more common though, sadly.

If my son ends up speaking like that, I'll disown him.

Yes, it's been going on for some years. I used to live in the West Midlands, and was walking through the centre of Coventry one afternoon, with a mate who was black. Now, this bloke was born and bred in the UK, and spoke without any kind of accent, perfect English.... until we ran into some of his 'urban' mates, and to my surprise and amusement, he dropped into some kind of cod-Jamaican speak, which made him sound like a complete and utter pillock!

Alas, poor Nicholas, also seems afflicted with this idea that to make oneself sound ignorant and from overseas, is 'cool' or 'hard' when in fact it only makes him seem as if he's slightly retarded.

That's a bit harsh. Nicholas' father speaks with an accent so it's inevitable that he will have picked up some of it given that he's presumably been living with his father.

You do have a point there. Perhaps people who habitually talk in that manner should take up residence in the sea as well

Urban speak translated:

"sla ma nogitmi" - "My mother doesn't understand me"

"sla da nogitmi" - "My father doesn't understand me"

"Sla me nowandepopowe" - "I want to be rich"

"sla me nogitglish" - "I have forgotten how to speak English"

"sla me nogitmepopowe" - "I have forgotten what 'popowe' means even though I made it up myself!"

"sla me nogitmeslamedon" - "I haven't a clue what I'm talking about"
