More than 400,000 radio fans in West Wiltshire can now tune in to seven brand new stations as Digital One and ntl switch on a new transmitter in the region.
The Naish Hill transmitter, located just outside of Melksham, went on-air last week (October 12) serving the towns of Devizes, Calne, and Chippenham, as well as Melksham itself, and parts of Trowbridge, Malmesbury and Bradford on Avon.
The transmitter allows a total of 408,000 people in West Wiltshire the potential to hear seven unique, digital only national radio stations, along with analogue national favourites Classic FM, Virgin Radio and talkSPORT,
all in crystal clear, hiss free, digital sound.
With a digital radio, listeners in the region can tune in to classic rock channel, Planet Rock, the fresh hits and chart music of Core, and Oneword, a channel devoted to plays, books and comedy. Capital Radio's national
digital station, Life, is also on the Digital One network, along with PrimeTime Radio for the over 50s, ITN's new rolling news service, and a business and finance channel from Bloomberg talkMONEY.
National commercial favourites Classic FM, Virgin Radio and talkSPORT are also broadcast in digital quality on the Digital One network.
The move is part of Digital One's commitment to rolling out transmitters across the country. It takes the network's footprint to 76 per cent of the UK population ... that's 42.18 million people. Over the next two years, Digital One and ntl will bring digital radio to more and more listeners, growing the potential audience to 85 per cent by the end of 2002.
Digital radios are becoming both more affordable and more accessible. The new VideoLogic in-home tuner is under £300, and the funky Psion WaveFinder, an aerial that turns your PC into a digital radio, is also selling at £299.
Major in-car manufacturers such as Blaupunkt, Pioneer and Grundig, are all offering in-car digital radios at less than £300.
They're all appearing in high street stores and are set to be the Christmas gift this year.
Digital One Chief Executive Quentin Howard says: "I am especially delighted to be able to bring commercial digital radio to listeners in West Wiltshire, not least because I live in the area and have done all my life!
It means greater choice and diversity of radio listening with interference free, near CD quality sound. Digital One has more national stations and greater coverage than anyone else, even the BBC. We're committed to
bringing this new listening experience to as much of the UK population as possible."
