Hi,

I've been reviewing a few posts about using the stb as a cable modem. Does anyone know if I would be able to plug a Vonage adaptor into my stb?

My regular cable modem + wireless router is upstairs - I don't really want to plug the adaptor and phone into the upstairs modem as I want the phone in my living room.

Does anyone know if this is possible? Would save me a roll of CAT5e and earn my eternal thanks!

Thanks
cmorton

The Pace boxes won't support the new speeds so initially at least you'll need to keep your seperate cable modem. Also if you have a cable modem, the STB won't be data-enabled for use as a cable modem so you won't get on the net by plugging in the back. As far as I know the only STB's that support the new speeds are the silver Samsung boxes.

The best suggestion I could offer is to buy a splitter, and so long as you have enough signal strength (which isn't usually a problem, but if it is you can buy a booster or ask a nice engineer to increase your signal in your local cabinet), you can split the cable to your STB in your living room, connect one end back to the STB and the other end to your cable modem.

Then get a wireless card for your PC upstairs and hide the wireless router behind your TV. You can then connect up a VOIP adapter and problem solved.

Alternatively, leave everything as it is now, then buy a wireless access point and connect your VOIP adapter to this instead. That's the more expensive option though as you need the access point.
