Hi I hope one of you guys can help a newbie with this...

Having just purchased this recorder a couple of things are puzzling me.
My set up is:
SonyTV_KV-28FX66U (2 RGB scarts / 1 S-Video scart)
Pace original digital decoder (2 scarts)
The RDR-HXD710

Pace VCR out to RDR line 3
RDR line 1 to TV line 2

Pace is set for 16:9 RGB output / trigger on.
RDR is set L1 RGB and L2 video/RGB

When the RDR is in standby, the pace signal is auto-detected by the TV and kicked in/out of widescreen, but not when RDR is on.

Is there no way around this?

Page 100 of the manual HQ setting infers that all recording on the HDD is in HQ mode, yet page 48 gives various HDD times depending on mode.
They can't both be right can they?

Apart from the +R quirk of recording widescreen as letterbox (which means it must be detecting the widescreen trigger) it looks a really great recorder.
All I need now is to find a second hand VCR (mine has totally had it) so I can transfer all my tapes across plus a few more days trying to digest the manual.
I just love looking something up in the index, going to that page and then a line later being jumped to another page

Is your pace connected to the TV directly or only via the RDR ?
if it is via the RDR, you have to switch imput to see the "external" signal.

Pace is connected direct to TV with a scart on RGB.
The problem is when the RDR is set to Line 3 (the pace) and the TV is set to the RDR input.
RDR in standby - widescreen trigger passes thro'
RDR on - widescreen trigger blocked.

I do watch what I'm recording most of the time

have 65u sony tv and digibox and sony 510 and the same problem on first set up everything thru 510 showing as smart mode, vcr scart on digibox does not do widescreen switching! i have, digibox tv scart > line 3 510..........tvscart on 510 >scart 1 rgb on tv. i think rushing for work will check later, let me know how you get on.

I am reluctant to try that as the manual (page 28) says...

Plus, I finally found the Pace manual and it says the TV Scart is output only.

I did finally get thro' to the Sony helpline today, but that was a really long phone call and a total waste of time unfortunately.

One major design fault I have also found with the 710 is the surround output. This is the first DVD player where you have go to the Set-Up menu (only available in HDD mode) and set the damn thing to Dolby Surround or DTS manually.

Which is a real shame, because the recording quality I cannot fault.

Just checking back and spotted this silly remark.
I think I'm suffering from Reading Manuals Fatigue

I think the only reason for connecting the Sky tuner via the VCR output is if you wish to use the Sky box to send record signals to your DVDR via it's autowatch system. I have always connected my Sky box TV output to my DVDR as this not only enables wide screen switching but also outputs RGB.

So if I connect the VCR output to the TV, will I loose the auto-switching on the TV?

have set up as i stated earlier, widescreen switching spot on, even when the 510 is on standby , whats the problem, give it a try, 510 still outputs thru scarts even when in standby mode, let me know,

My reluctance to jump in and change it over until I got confirmation was as much down to the difficulty in doing it - everythings on shelf under the TV which you need a crane to move, and pulling out one item usually upsets the plugs on something else - and my back isn't up to it these days

congragulations, all i need to know now is how to put my vcr into the mix, to archive my tapes, as it would not be a permanent set up, i think i will just disconect my digibox tv scart and plug it into the vcr to transfer the tape to the hdd, will give it a bash this weekend, glad you have got the stuff working, great bit of kit eh.

I was thinking about the VCR bit as well, though I was also wondering if doing the transfer thro' the front S-VHS socket might be the answer.
It would save the hassle of pulling the equipment about, and I'm not certain we would loose much in terms of quality. After all, the tapes are not up to the quality of the kit we've got now

you're right. The best you can have with a VCR is S-VHS, so using the S-VHS plug in the front is probably the best solution to back up your tapes with no hassle.

my video dosent have a svideo connection , whats the next best temporary way to do this

What do you mean by 'autowatch' exactly? Is this the synchro thing where the RDR records when the Sky+ copy starts? I too am tempted to use the TV out on the SKy+ because of the need to daisy chain three devices...

use the classic Yellow/White/Red connections.

do i connect these connections to line 2 at the front or line 4 at the back of the recorder, i tried line 2 at the front but could not get a picture thru line 2 to record my videos. thanks.
