Is it just me who's getting sick of the whole soap gay thing? I'm not anti-gay, but every soap seems to feel obliged to have a gay storyline every so often. For a small yorkshire village emmerdale seems to have a lot of gay residents. First there was Zoe, and what was even more bizarre was that practically every woman she ever met or had working for her miraculosuly became gay too! Now we have Paul and Ivan; Paul fair enough has always been obviously gay, but Ivan!?!? And the lesbian mayor!
Eastenders is doing another gay thing now with Sonia. Corrie had Todd.
Its all soooo boring, banging the same drum again. If soaps want to throw in the odd gay character, fine, but why do they have to keep repeating this old storyline of somebody suddenly becoming gay.

I don't see how they are. Ivan has only been there six months or less, and hasn't featured much, so he's hardly "suddenly" become gay. In fact he's actually bi...

Jason arrived gay more or less, as did Paul.

That's as ridiculous as saying let's not have any more straight romances because they've all been done a zillion times before. Every relationship is different surely?

I saw the Ivan/Paul thing coming a mile off.

I had been hoping it would be someone really unlikely.

Shadrach LOL.

No but seriously, it was too predictable IMHO.

Well who else can it be without being totally stupid? Danny maybe, but that could be seen as predictable as well.

I don't think this is designed to shock or surprise, it's just another bloke being gay and getting with Paul...

How do you mean, soaps feel obliged to? They have gay characters because gay people exist. Why should there be any objection to, or boredom with, that?

If Paul's getting some action, I'm pleased for him I just hope Sean gets lucky in Corrie too.

Don't put spoilers in your title threads please! But it was predictable that the kiss would be between Paul and someone else - I never thought Ivan though!

I think a lot of it is disproportionate though and all part of the PC thing.
I read in the weekend papers complaints about there not being enough ethnic minority characters in soaps; now, that may be a different point, as in some soaps it seems there are more gay characters than ethnic minorities, when in real life there will be more ethnic minority people.

That said, its all relative. Arguably Eastenders should have more asian characters to reflect the reality of ethnic diversity in London. Likewise Neighbours - in a Melbourne suburb there would likely be a range of ethnic groups.
