Bearing in mind that The Conways have had a hit in Ireland I am assuming that they have a degree of popularity over there in addition to the fact that they are Irish. Also I am assuming that a large percentage of their votes come from Ireland (yes I know that not all Irish people are voting for them..)

I'm wondering if Sharon's negative comments about the Irish Mafia and The CS having sneaked through because of their nationality will mean that Sharon will have annoyed some Irish people enough for them to vote for the CS even if they hadn't voted before..?

Yeah I reckon Sharon's reactived the IRA into shooting her dead.

The opposite I would think, they have gone from being generally fairly likeable irish girls who seemed to have potential but struggled getting their 4-piece harmonies right (much more difficult than most people realise) into hard faced, lousy-singing cheats who took away that lovely, beautiful, angel voiced Maria's chance at stardom (in the average viewers mind anyway).

Lol either way it pretty much seems she hates the Irish and the Irish hate her for the time being.

To the British maybe, but like I said I reckon the majority of their votes come from Ireland - I don't think the Irish will generally be that happy with Sharon..

I really don't think it's a nationality thing, it's a personality thing, in competitions like these personality is half the battle, before saturday Maria didn't have one, now she is the victim (not sure what of, but victim anyway), before saturday the Conways had a personality that was generally positive, now the majority of viewers will look upon them negatively, this will far outweigh any votes she gets from sympathisers who feel they have been dragged into something they wanted no part in and those who may be angry at Sharons comments.

I haven't watched the X factor much tbh but the only reason I'm interested in this discussion is because a lot of Irish people I know in Ireland hate her guts now. I'm sure she'll have to avoid doing Irish tv shows and stuff for while or maybe forever depending on how bitter they are/she is.

Whatever happened to...

I think where Ireland, Scotland or Wales are concerned it does become a Nationality thing - especially when they only have one act from their part of the world in it. I think it is quite widely accepted that Michelle McManus wouldn't have won PI if not for a huge amount of votes from North of the border. Its different in England, the show is set in England, most of the acts come from England - England is sort of seen as the rich relative by Ireland and such like - I don't want to get into a deep nationlistic argument here but I do think the Irish etc are much more partisan simply because they are not expected to do as well..

I thought this may well be the case and if so I imagine a number of Irish who hadn't voted will vote for CS simply to spite Sharon now as much as for actually thinking that the CS are the best act

I must disagree wholeheartedly.

On the subject of Michelle McManus, I don't know any Scottish people who actually thought she should have won - in fact many of them were tired of her "I'm scottish so vote for me Scotland" attitude.

I think you would need to step beyond borders to understand that not everyone is patriotic as what they seem to think

Plus, it's only a game show. It won't affect my life, so whoever wins won't change my life for better or worse.

Yeah I guess it would be part of the Irish rebel thing Spiv.

ITV would be shooting themselves in the foot if they never included anyone from Ireland. The show depends on raking in revenue from advertisers, as well as voting; ITV as a commercial broadcaster are able to pitch the show to potential advertisers, and therefore if they can attract viewers from Ireland they will gain more revenue.

firstly most people in Ireland think the Conways are an embarassment.

they think the same of Westlife.

I think Sharons comment about the Mafia was really stupid and careless but I don't think much of her anyways, never have done!!

Louis Walsh isn't exactly Mr popular over here either, I think most people think the same about him as the views expressed on this forum.

SO I honeslty cannot see The Conways getting votes based on Sharons comments.

as other FMs have stated, The Conways have gone from being inoffensive and Okish to coming across as surly and ungrateful, I think they are doomed.

And i think they haven't a hope of any career after this.

they seem so hated now

The other issue is that they need the advertising to make showing it on an Irish TV station pay.

There's a thread about Louis Walsh here from the entertainment forums in Ireland incase anybody wanted to check on views across the water:

Damn I wanted more "WE HATE SHARON! WE HATE SHARON!", I want to get a war going.

What have they got to be grateful for? Why are these girls required to go around like slavering, pathetic peons?

I disagree with you with regard to Irish people not voting for them on foot of Sharon's comments, by the way. Irish people will vote for them now, I imagine. They weren't liked much and neither was Louis, but the tabloid campaign against them and the anti-Irish feeling that they've generated will bring in votes.

Hi Lep

I must admit I am only going from what I have read about the voting patterns, I don't have any close aquaintances that are Irish or Scottish for that matter and also I'm certainly not including everyone under that umbrella, I do think there is a degree of it though - I'll have a look for some actual references to it if I have time and can frankly be bothered I was just asking to see what people think to be honest I don't really care if the Conways stay or go or even who votes for them, just interested to see if Sharons comments will have a positive or adverse effect..

Oh really? Where did you learn that from, the Sun? I don't think Ireland has anything to learn from England about music.

It's not widely accepted where I live (Scotland).

You guys have got it very wrong.. Firstly; no, the Conway sisters weren't well known over here in the first place.. I had no clue of their "number one hit", until I read about it here..

Secondly, all I've been hearing about on the radio all week, is that Louis made a lousy decision. The Conways are viewed as an embarassment, or even a gammy version of the Corrs.

I haven't heard anybody expressing hatred towards Sharon because of her comments; I think most people found it funny, GOOD TV.. not a major political incident, or a slur on our nation.. lol. Don't expect protest votes just yet..

^ Just saw this.. Lol, wake up and smell the century! A rich relative?? And why on earth are we "not expected to do as well..."
