Which performance for you has made you forget that the act singing it is not the original artist?

Chico has made me forget a couple of times (esp. with Livin La Vida Loca) Maria did on Saturday with Brown Sugar, and Brenda did with Son of a Preacher man.
Suprisingly, Journey South have never managed to do this for me. There I was all waiting to be impressed by their performance of Livin on a prayer, and what were they weak?

When Brenda sung Midnight Train To Georgia. She was so fantastic and just blew me away.

Brenda is the only performer I watch without expecting any duff notes or nerves, still wouldn't vote for her or buy an album by her but she does seem the most natural performer. None have distracted me from what is really just karaoke/bad covers.

I loved Maria singing You're Beautiful - her performance was very professional! That could have been her song!

I think Journey Souths performance of Livin on a prayer was a bit like weak Kareoke with an excellent guitar solo in the middle.
If you know me you'll know I absolutely 100% luurrrrrvvve JS, but I really didn't enjoy the high notes of that performance!

That's the point - there just isn't one whose album/single I would be interested in buying - are there enough people around who would?

I'm not really sure that matters much from the point of view of the show. They probably make money from advertisements, phone votes and text votes. As acts "discovered" on these shows seldom go anywhere much it could be just a bit of fun for Simon et al, sort of "The Simon and Sharon (and Louis, or whoever) Show". It's entertainment, when all's said and done, and lots of people watch it so it's just as worth doing as any game show I guess. And of course the performers don't get paid (at least, I assume they don't?), they get their minute-or-fifteen of fame, and the rest of us get something to interest us for a few weeks.

However, that having been said, it could be that with the proper packaging, marketing, song, publicity and hype any one of us might be persuaded to buy an album. It really just depends how any of them are managed. After all, Will Young's doing great but I don't rate him any more than I rate Shayne, so maybe there's something there for him. And Maria's as good as any of those American divas, if you ask me. I really hope she does well, she deserves to!

Only two really standout performances the whole series for the right reasons.

Journey South - The First Time
Maria - Beautiful

JS are the only act I have ever heard cover that song and not try to 'big it up' and be more Roberta Flack than Roberta Flack. The song doesn't need any bells and whistles it is a beautiful song and the simplicity and starkness of JS's performance was stunning.

Maria made me like a song I had hated up to that point and for the first and only time in the series I almost liked her too. She is of course very talented as a vocalist and she looks the part but something about her just left me cold.

For the wrong reasons several performances have stood out for me.

Philip's Johnny Be Good - unintentionally I'm sure but hilarious

Conway Sisters murdering first Total Eclipse and then that abysmal One Voice production. The second was not entirely their fault, they did fall apart but the choir was overwhelming and unnecessary.

Chico - once again unintentionally hilarious with Hero.

Nicholas - Every song he has mangled every week.

OK. Here goes.

Shayne - 'If your not the one' completely blew me away. I played it over and over and had to get the Daniel Bedingfield original out to compare. He is a real talent and has all the potential that the judges suggest. Plus it's really nice of him to put in four ordinary performances to give the others a chance.

Chico - Loved the moondance thing. Other than that, he is now starting to make me itch.

Conways - Erm. Erm. I really want to say something inspirational after all of the grief that seems to be flowing their way right now, but I can't. Destined for a career involving lots of weddings.

Andy - Always impressive but just not my thing. For me, his performances just blend together into really pleasant elevator music. I'm sorry if that sounds harsh. Elevators can be very pleasent. I once worked in the head office of a bank in Slovakia with six elevators. Each one played a different style of music. The heavy rock elevator was always packed. I travelled on the Westlife elevator because I like my space.

Journey South - I am a huge Roberta Flack fan. My mum used to play the 'First time ever I saw your face/Will you still love me tomorrow' single all the time. When I left home I stole it and took it with me. I really thought they would murder it but they didn't. It was brill.

Nicholas - I don't get it. I think the judges are keeping him in the competition as 'Plan B,' just in case Shayne's voice breaks and he loses his appeal.

Brenda - 'Son of a Preacher Man,' stole the first show, 'Rescue me,' I thought if I ever heard that song again on a talent show I would shoot myself, Brenda however has so much personality and stage presence, she blew me away, meaning I didn't have to. 'Midnight Train to Georgia,' awesome! Possibly the best thing on this show so far, Someone Else's Guy. I think by this point, Brenda has started to feel that she is in the show on merit and realises how good she is. Rather than becoming complacent (like some younger, more male contentants) she is doubling her effort. A brilliant performance. (Heartbreaker was ok)

Most memorable performance.

Philip doing Wind beneath my Wings, followed by the one the following week where he lost complete control of his limbs. The moral of these performances is that two wrongs can never make a right.

Cheers. Great Question!

I should know, I was with you when you did it.

Dad, you're 38, almost 39 (old person) and you replayed it about 300 times. You sad, sad man.

I have only ever watched one reality show and that was Fame Academy 2, but after the blatant rigging of that i had more than enough so i never watched anymore.

It was only when i accidentally heard Journey South do The First Time, i was absolutely blown away. I too have very fond memories of my mother playing this when i was very young and i didn't like the idea of anyone covering it. That was the start of me watching X Factor and primarily only to hear what else they do with the covers they're given. I absolutely love live music when it's stripped right back like they do.

IMHO real music isn't about somebody writing their own material because if an artist can really make it their own the way they did with that song then as you say you forget it wasn't an original. What it does do though is make me want to hear their own material because if a cover is that good then their own stuff should be pretty impressive, if you’re into that style of music.

For all the others i think Andy has a great voice, it's just not the kind of music i listen to. I also think Nicholas has a gorgeous tone, i Know he's out of tune a lot but i'd love to here him sing something (obviously in tune) right through without nerves to get a better idea.

I never got to record The First time but i would have loved a CD or better still DVD of that. I also never in my wildest dreams thought there would be anyone who would make me want to buy a song my 74 year old mother listened to.

That was a bit long winded just to say, yes, one group.

Kiss & Tell, I know we seem to be following each other around the threads agreeing with each other like a couple of nodding dogs but I couldn't have put it better. TFTEISYF is the only time that anyone's made me forget the original artist on the show so far in a totally good way.

The other two performances I've thought were outstanding so far were Shayne's 'If you're not the one' and Brenda's 'Somebody else's guy' but neither really shook off the original versions.

Maria's 'You're beautiful' and Andy's Nat King Cole pastiche were different to the original versions but only because they were infinitely inferior.

Anything Chico does makes me forget the original artist as I sit there open-mouthed

Anything the Conwayzzz does makes me forget what the original tune was, let alone who the original artist was...

I know what you mean, but I think maybe the show needs a Chico, in the same way as Pop Idol needed a Darius and Big Brother 6 needed a Craig, if for no other reason than to generate some controversy and strong feelings.

P.S. If it makes you feel any better I must have played 'If you're not the one' about 300 times since it was on the show too.

lol... cracking posts and a good topic...

I'd agree with JS and their "first time" as the stand out perfomance of the series so far and the only one to strike out significantly from the original version.

Brenda, Maria and Andy are all competent, but if I want to listen to Gladys Knight, Jocelyn Brown, Nat King Cole or Stevie Wonder I will, not just a competent impression.

None of the other acts have come up with anything remotely to interest me beyond the saturday night entertainment.

JS if they did an acoustic type album of covers with original harmonies and their own twist on it as with "first time", yeah I'd download that for free.... and you can't say fairer than that...

quick question, I listened to an mp3 of Shayne doing if you're not the one on the net the other day. In the background, I could hear what sounded like another vocal track being played at the same time as his song, also singing the melody, and it sounded like a keyboard was playing the vocal line too in a higher octave as well. If anyone else can hear it, I'd be interested to know. It was a decent performance btw, not knocking him, just wasn't different enough from the original to qualify for this thread...for me anyway.

Impressive performances........................Louis when Sharon had to choose between 4tune and Chenai, it was so believable until he stabbed her in the back 2 weeks later.
