PS - i meant to say in my previous thread that I really find it comforting to know there are others in the same sorry state.
I love reading the threads - especially those that really have a real gift for words. |

The GD forum can get a bit of getting used too but it can be very good fun. I've been visiting DS nearly everyday for over two years now and it is definitely the best forum that I have visited. Yes there are a few idiots around but the vast majority here are very friendly.
Also take this opportunity to invite everybody to Friday's Live Chat during and in between the C4 eviction shows. Just click the 'Live Chat' link on the DS:BB site and use your forum username and password to enter. |

Will try to be there MrO
Can I drag the thread back to topic Net communication is a meta language with a new set of 'rules' as well as lots of the rules of verbal comms - smilies etc to indicate intention/mood etc. It strikes me as quite weird that we are all watching a 'reality' show that isn't and then talking to each other in the way we do - with aliases - forming alliances, flirting, arguing and sometimes being aggressive. It's compulsive - like BB3 - but its not 'real' So theres a double willing suspension of reality going on. Discuss ![]() MGOM |

To tell the truth I'm fed up discussing 'Virtual Communities'. I had to write a very long essay about them just a few weeks ago for University.
I can say that DS doesn't replace my real life socialisation but mearly suppliments it |

Virtual communities

So, in conclusion, people using DS today may still be in contact with some of the same people using it in say 10 years time - perhaps not on DS, but by email or ICQ or similar. A forum such as DS brings like-minded people, who have a common interest, in contact with each other ! |

So you think it can be as valid a 'meeting place' as in real life?
I wonder if the very fact you were doing something quite ground-breaking all those years ago - cutting edge etc - is a factor whereas these days anyone can get online and post/chat etc? MGOM not sure myself |

IMHO its as valid and as 'real' as BB itself. But nonetheless it has a 'value' But I'd rather sit down with a glass of wine and talk to someone face to face than pound this laptop - and correct my typing errors!! Jack says: WTF are you on about? Mustget said: OK its fun and it can be quite thought-provoking but you can't look into someone's eyes and get all the non-verbal cues. Jack says: so it's eye contact and NVC that makes it real? So blind people can't have real social interaction then? That's fine as a theory, but I wouldn't adopt it as my definition. Mustget said: IMHO its as valid and as 'real' as BB itself. Jack says: yes, you're agreeing with me... Mustget said: But nonetheless it has a 'value' Jack says: value is something new, I certainly wasn't trying to attach value to anything earlier. Would you like to talk about value? (I love this game!) Mustget said: But I'd rather sit down with a glass of wine and talk to someone face to face than pound this laptop - and correct my typing errors!! Jack says: there you go with value again, you imply that it's whether YOU like something that makes it a "valuable" event. Heres a scenario for you: lets say someone, lets call him "jack" had formed a very strong email relationship with a girl, including email pictures. Then this "jack" learned that this girl was ill, with something very serious . Would his sadness at her extreme illness be any less "valid" in your view just becuase they'd never physically met? Jack also says: So what do you make of some poeple's undoubted grief at the death of Princess Di? Is that less "valid" becuase they never met or even communicated at all? Jack finally says: I am intrigued. There's no right or wrong here, I'm testing your view for internal consistancy etc, but if is then I'll respect it as a world view, even if I dont agree. MGOM nite nite virtual pals !!!!!!!!!!BRING BACK THE DAVINA THREAD!!!!!!!! |

No-one seems to gossip about people at work anymore.
After the shift handover we settle down for a cup of tea and discuss the HMs instead. And with our new computers installed recently we can access the likes of the DS forums. YAY!!! (I am on a night shift tonight and it will surely make the time go quicker.) Sad?? I don't think so. For a while we are leaving someone else alone. Someone at work could be having a torrid affair with someone they shouldn't be and none of us would notice! I am not sure what I will do when it is finished. I have e4 on the "live" feeds during the day, just in case anything of note happens, like someone goes to the toilet, or eats breakfast. I just love people watching. E4 should buy in the foreign versions to keep us all going, or commission rolling BBs. You could replace all the evictees and have a continuously changing House, with someone getting a prize every 8 weeks or so if they last that long. (getting carried away now) BC whose cat will sorely miss the chickens. |

Re: What to do after BB3 (UK) finishes
Just pop over to the US version which started on Wednesday, (I think their version lasts 16 weeks!)
http://www.cbs.com/primetime/bigbrother3/ I wish we could have a channel that showed various BB's from the US, Australia, New Zealand etc (even the old ones) just to see how different people are around the world. Last edited by Longsightboy : 11-07-2002 at 09:34. |

Hello - my name is plums and I'm not a BB3 addict but came to this thread to see if I could help those that are.
I know I'm not addicted because I didn't ask NTL to give me E4 - but was pleased when they accidentally put it on for 24 hrs. I only watched during the 19 hours I was awake that day. I did on 2 occasions 'find' a link to Realplayer streams for 24 hrs and during those times still managed to eat, drink,go to the toilet and wash/shower/shave by placing a large mirror in such a way as to see my PC monitor. I only stay on this forum until 2am most nights. BB3 addict - not me mate ! ![]() I'm also a lightweight as my tally of posts include lots from the other forums on DS............ Like others I have noticed in this thread, I am also doing a thesis (well, a dissertation...), which means 'working' from home. I kid myself that having BB on E4 pootling away in the background is merely a relaxing hum, that analysing the dynamics of the HMs inter-relationships will facilitate a greater appreciation of a) social psychology, and b) modern, popular culture - all very useful for my academic research, of course! (The fact that my current study focus is adapations of Jane Austen's courtship plots, is completely beside the point!) I am also buying a house, supposed to be embroiled in the hassle of moving, and my husband has started a new job - and yet he still knows to ask me first and foremost how Alex is getting on. So sad.
Actually, Alex is my particular problem, I find. I don't fancy him at all, I often find him irritating beyind belief, but for some bizarre reason wish to know his precise location 24/7. If I hear his droney, dulcet tones, I have to listen. Simple. This is so annoying. I wish he had been evicted, as I'm kept in a perpetual state of suspense wondering what he'll do next. |

Hello Gadfly, I know EXACTLY what you mean! I cannot resist listening to him! His voice drives me potty but he suddenly comes out with stuff that makes me laugh and I can't bear to miss them. I do have an excuse 'tho, he reminds me of my father, who died two years ago. Make his voice a bit posher and a bit deeper and it could be him (only he was a lot more intelligent). My father also had all those camp little mannerisms and what I loved about him was that he had the confidence not to care what people thought about his campness
God I miss him:'( Sorry, rambling.Mavis |

I only have access to the internet at work and unfortunately don't have E4 at home. The first thing I do when I come into work is to read the live updates from last night and catch up on all the discussions of the previous night and then all day I read discussions. Oh god I am obsessed, the first thing I do when I go home is to tell my housemates what revelations there have been that day. Someone lock me up please quick! However, I have to say that this is way the best BB website there is and I would be lost without it!
