The lovely Beth says that some of the GD forums are okay: haven't check myself yet, but I'm not going to argue with Beth!

They are, I went exploring the other night. I think I'll stick around once BB has finished, although probably not until this time in the morning!

I mostly agree here. Hiding behind pseudonyms can give greater freedom to express yourself though. I've posted quite a few examples of my (not so great) childhood on here, not something I'd usually do in a room full of strangers!

Hmnn that's an interesting slant on virtual comms
Anyone else feel this??

I don't know really. What you see *read* is what you get with me in real life.

Although I suppose if people dont like me on-line it doesnt bother me as much as someone I know going .. god what a cow you are.

I was lucky . I was never abused by anyone - my childhood was fine - had lots of friends at school - these days still have some friends. No I am NOT a Kate person!

But I think the ananomity (jeez I can't spell that, anonmity, anonimity?) of being able to say things and getting positive feedback from others who have shared the same experience must help.

I dont mean that to sound patronising ... am sorry if it does

LK - who cant even do a detox for 6 hours ... no strength of character whatever

I woke up at 3am this AM and came down for a glass of water - looked at the laptop and switched it on for a quick look. I then, through bleary eyes, started to try to answer your questions - got to the penultimate one and BINGO my ISP booted me off assuming I was not 'using' the Internet (oh for Broadband)

So - happy to answer all your questions if you'll break them up into bite-size pieces and bung them up one at a time. Might be less arduous for the others too

Don't worry MG:
I 'll go of my own accord.
As someone who's *very* interested in linguistics (which does include semantics of course) and social psychology I thought that it would be interesting to have a debate about the difference between different methods of communication and why someone (ie you) would consider some methods "invalid" and others "valid". But as all that seems to result is that I'm being called "pedantic" (even by someone who agrees with me! ) then I can't be arsed.

Apologies for wanting a serious discussion. (i know I can be rather dull that way- which is why I'd be really unpopular in The House)

Bye

Perfect example of someone mis-reading a comment - and the apparent pointlessness of using smilies to indicate intention!!!!

BTW I was interested in your posts but - if you read what I wrote- I can't reply to such LONG posts. So I asked you to break it down into more appropriate bite-sized pieces - easier for me and the rest of us too methinks.

how spooky, we seem to have a few things in common, you are not me are you .

I only ever visit one chat room (been a reg for years) which has a hard core of regulars so they all *know* me and all my little idiosyncracies. I have met quite a few of them in RL and they say I am the same person as online. On a different level (my OU online server) I think I am perceived differently as most of the chat that goes on there is education based (obv). Somehow I think I come over more serious there due to the fact that most people I interact with (apart from one who is a scream) are quite sober in general.

I also tend to form 'opionions' of people whom I chat to based on their 'style', which quite possibly might not be the right ones.

I think it's definitely true that since noone here knows who we 'really' are, we can be quite free about what information to share with the group..i certainly wouldn't have any qualms about saying otherwise 'private' things here if i felt they were pertinent since anonymity protects me. having said that, it would also make it very easy for me to lie to try to prove a point! eg, "i know Tim is a nutter cos i know him in real life" etc (which isn't true btw, the second bit not the first!)

ANyway, my point is that anonymity gives you freedom for many things, and while i'm not saying anyone on this forum is being untruthful, i am saying that we are all unaccountable for our actions, which is not like 'real life'. I could say the worst thing here in the world and the worst thing that could happen to me is that my account is disabled. That is the fundamental difference between this interaction and face- to-face, or even perhaps just using our real names/email addresses!!

PS i know i know, it's a shock to you guys that i'm not really called elfpetal...

Yes EP its very easy to get suckered into believing a false reality on the Net. There's enough stories about children being 'conned' by paedophiles on the net to back that up.

In a sense anyone can be who they want to be.... any gender etc etc etc.

Therefore communications on the Net must always carry a health warning. We all use these stupid nicknames and we are as you rightly say unaccountable for what we say.

There's also the security aspect. I am very careful about the information I give out on the Net especially in open forums like these. If you think this is OTT read the recent article in the Sunday Times supplement.

So I only give a minimum of information about myself and I suspect most of the regulars are doing likewise.

The communication is valid - as valid as any communication between a sender and a receiver - but its NOT real and it should not be regarded as real

Nuff said - HAPPY WEEKEND -- BYE BYE PEEEJAAAAAAAYY
