Sony 710 problem outputting WS picture

I have set the TV output of the 710 to 4:3 widescreen so that the freeview tuner will be shown 16:9 on a 4:3 TV, the problem is that only some of the channels ( maybe 3 ) are putting the 16:9 picture to the TV and and all the rest are putting a picture that is in proportion ( ie not stretched or shrunk ) but have a tiny black bar top and bottom i can't for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong

One other question does the 710 automatically record in widescreen to the HDD ????

Some channels can set newer Freeview boxes to 14:9 letterbox rather than 16:9 (my Sony VTXD800 Freeview box does this with BBC and ITV channels). I would imagine that this is what you're seeing (especially as they're both Sony products).
