Are there any rules about judges having connections to the contestants?
Title says it all,
but most competitions have rules against employees or their families taking part. |

I don't think there can be - if there were the Conway Sisters wouldn't be where they are as their links to Louis and well publicised, Louis' also obv met Shayne when he was a judge on Popstars the Rivals and if it was one of the rules, to an extent, contestants from last year wouldn't really be able to participate - ie Chenai, 4Tune, 4th Ba5e/Iyce who all reached bootcamp stages so would already know the judges

They were previously employees, or at least suported a group that he managed, which could make him a co-employee as Westlife would be the employer.
Perhaps there's an actual legal requirement, rather than an optional rule that competition organisers have to follow. |

Include Maria in that list as well so if we are going to apply this rule neither of the contestants in the bottom two on Saturday should have been in the competition. |

I think Maria just didn't get enough support, she wasn't very well liked judging by the opinions of a lot of people on this forum.

Judging by this years mob, I'd say it was actively encouraged Quote:

I'm sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere, but does anybody know what the voting percentage was for Saturday - or even if it's been published - and where Maria was in the rankings over the previous weeks? (Just wondering if she'd been at the top previously or if she had spent the whole of the series flirting with the bottom 2 slots despite the judges comments) |

Knowing the contestants ahead of time is nothing new. If they were really strict about this kind of thing, Darius might not have been allowed in Pop Idol, and Andy Scott-Lee definitely wouldn't have since Pete Waterman knew him very well.
A whole string of people on Fame Academy had publishing deals, and Louise Griffiths had been in a girl band that originally were going to do "Sound of the Underground" before stepping aside so Louis Walsh could use it for Girls Aloud. Louise and her fellow band members are even thanked in the CD notes. If after Comedy Connections and Drama Connections, they made Talent Show Connections, they might find it impossible to draw the diagram. |

If you miss "24/7" on Wednesdays, it's repeated on Fridays at 7.30pm, just before "Xcess All Areas" which is at 8.30pm. |

It's satisifies the "reality" aspect of the show by showing them in the big house they all live in, and what happened to the act that was voted off the previous Saturday. More importantly in terms of the competition, it's the first time we see what the remaining acts will be performing the next week, as we see a bit of them trying out the songs for the first time, and rehearsing and so on. It's much more revealing than the Friday show, "The Xtra Factor: Xcess All Areas".

It did show Maria last Wednesday arguing with them about the mentors and didn't show her in a good light at all, that's why I thought she was up for the chop on Saturday. Maybe they knew she wasn't that popular anyway and that's what they're doing each week, showing the ones they feel are unpopular or want out in a bad light. It happened with Chenai the week before, although I know people disagree with me and think it was others who were shown in a bad light. |

Admittedly, those who watch the extra shows are the ones most interested in X Factor, and may therefore be more interested in voting than than the other 7.8m who watch the main show.
It just seems that on the basis of the Wednesday shows, the last 2 to be shown in a bad light have gone, maybe it's coincidence I don't know |

I believe any previous connection with the show or the judges should disqualify an act from entering for their own sakes if nothing else. Unfair if someone has genuine talent to ,miss out on an opportunity maybe but it's even unfairer when the connection is exposed and they are then subjected to a barrage of public abuse. My personal dislike for the Conway Sisters as an act aside, they are in an invidious position. Let's say they were incredibly talented and deserving winners of the show - yes I know but just use your imaginations - their close connection to Louis would always taint that victory in the eyes of the public and of the other contestants and cries of 'fix' and 'cheats' would follow them their entire careers.
It must have seemed like a great idea at the time to use their connections to get themselves showcased on national tv but they have been very ill-advised and Louis is as much to blame for that as anyone, he should have been the one to point out the impropriety of the connection from the start and either disqualified himself as a judge or advised them not to enter. He and the producers must have been aware that this last week's uproar could and would happen and really it wouldn't have mattered WHO they were up against. They are as much victims of the behind the scenes manipulations for ratings as Maria. |
