I really liked Colin and Derek in EE and the character in Doctors (Greg I think his name is).

I agree, Emmerdale has (/ has had) the best gay characters.”

I'm not sure Charity was really bi, just a money grabbing slapper

Emmerdale probably wins for having the longest serving "fully rounded" gay character

Family Affairs is probably next best for having a number of decent gay characters (shame none seemed to stay more than 12-18months)

Sean in FA was excellent. I sobbed my little heart out when he died in the show.

Zoe Tate was a bit of a limited character I mean how many lesbian nannies could the woman really have it off with. Case of the only gay in the village syndrome.

Eastenders used Derek appallingly.

Tony and Simon were alright.

Baz in Hollyoaks was a good character they showed him struggling with his sexuality then deciding to be Bi before realising he was gay.

Also not strictly a soap but Jack in Dawsons Creek. Obviously Kevin Williamson who is gay wanted to say something really valid and the story started off so strongly. Then the network cut every attempt at a kiss and he was hardly in it again!

Family Affairs have been the best at having successful gay characters IMO. They have had so many though and they never stay around for long. I liked Max, wasnt too keen on Sami though but thats mainly down to his appalling acting.

I didnt like Todd at all in Corrie, Sean is OK but id like to see him have a boyfriend not constant one night stands (Tim, Andrew, that guy from the bingo etc)

Baz in Hollyoaks was bisexual wasnt he? He was another good character.

Zoe and her many girlfriends in Emmerdale were good, as was Jason and Joe. Bernice's boyfriend Gavin was bisexual wasnt he?

Madge from Neighbours, right?

Anyway, Karl from Corrie ruled. As did Zoe from Emmerdale. And I love Sean from Corrie and Paul from Emmerdale. Ivan - time will tell. I like him, but not yet as a 'gay character'!

I loved Todd from Corrie, Zoe and Paul from Edale, Greg from Doctors.... there are probably more. But those are the ones who are most effective IMO.

Yes, Jo of course, but I was thinking outside of The Bill.

On that note, Gilmore was good but he didn't last long...

i liked Derek in Eastenders, the shame of it was that he was in the soap for over three years and didnt do all that much to speak of. he was a great guy and brought some good stuff to the soap, they axed him way to soon.
Nick in Hollyoaks was great, very strong and independant.
Sean in Corrie can be described in one word-bloody brilliant!

I think Jo is the best gay character I've seen in any soap/drama including The Bill. She's not a tokenistic, far-fetched, one-dimensional lesbian charicature, she's a well-rounded, funny and believable character who is portrayed as a copper first and foremost.

End of.

I have liked all the Gay characters in The Bill apart from Lance. I have never liked Lance a lot. With 2 exceptions I usually like all gay characters, my favouries, being Sean, Paul, Ivan?, Zoe and Derek. I never liked Todd and Karl for the way they contrived to betray the lovely Sarah.
