line rentel
im currently with ntl phone but i thinking of changing. Is it only ntl and bt who i can get the line from?
i know there are other companies like onetel where you pay a few quid over your bt line rental and you get cheaper calls. im not after that, i want another provider who i can get the line from. |

OneTel, TalkTalk, Bulldog, IT Plus offer line rental. OneTel and TalkTalk also offer just a CPS serivce no need to change line rental away from BT.
However the consensus is, never get line rental from anyone else other than from BT. Only BT have to allow you access to low cost phone call providers, the others can and do block access, therefore the 50p you save on line rental is quickly lost in call costs. IT Plus are a no no, they definately block access and are not much cheaper, plus they have a rolling 12 month contract, meaning if you don't inform them 30 days before your current 12 months is up, you are stuck with them for another 12 months. With BT you can get free caller display (via www.bt.com/btprivacy) provided you make 'some' calls via them - some being one call per billing period. The others usually charge £1.50 - £1.75 for caller display. Bulldog are a nightmare, even now my cousin is again having problems with his broadband, also phone calls are not ringing out his end, some go straight to voicemail when they shouldn't and messages aren't being save so he doesn't know any are left, still he has days where he can't make phone calls. The best solution is BT for your line rental with free caller display, then choose a CPS provider which offers free evening and weekend calls for no monthly charge, such as Just Dial Saver (also offer capped calls to mobiles off-peak) or planet-talk. Then for your daytime UK landline calls use Call 18866 as they charge only 3 pence per call. If you make international calls, then there are many options to choose from and you can mix and match for your chosen destintion. See: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi...95003038,99872, and also: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/...aysprune=&f=68 You will be doing yourself no favours sticking to the same company for both line rental and calls. |

Line rental
You could try MCI Worldcom, they may offer telephone service to you. Call: 0800-018-1818. BT,NTL,Telewest and Wight Cable are the only companies which have their own infrastructure. However, the companies like OneTel,Bulldog and Tele2 use BT lines and you can now pay line rental and call costs directly to your service provider rather than paying BT for line rental and paying your alternative service provider call costs on two seperate bills! Here is a list for you: For Home: One Tel& British Gas NTL Home Tele2 Telewest Wight Cable North (OMNE) Wight Cable Solent Tiscali Smart-Talk (replaced NPower) London Energy/SWEB and EDF Tesco Homephone Post Office Homephone Kingston Comms (You can now use Kingston via BT lines!) Primus Sainsbury's homephone TalkTalk (Opal Telecom) Toucan Talk (Calls to mobiles more expensive than BT) Scottish Power Bulldog Communications 18866 Woolwich Bank telephone service Ideal Homephone (from Lloyds TSB) Business: BT Cable and Wireless/Energis Thus (Scottish Telecom) Your Communications (Norweb) MCI Worldcom NTL Business Telewest Business/Imminus Spacetel Torch Switch Colt Fibreway Cable Telecom One Tel Bulldog Business Kingston Comms Payphone Communication: BT Payphones Euro-Payphone (Ulster only) NWP Spectrum/New World Premier payphones (Infolines Premier) 4 Kiosk Solutions/Central payphones/interphone Kingston Comms. Patientline Telefonix Mobile Communications: Orange O2 Vodafone T-Mobile 3-Mobile Virgin Mobile Mobile World/TalkTalk Fresh Mobile Easy Mobile Tesco Mobile BT Mobile OneTel/British Gas Sainsbury's Mobile Kingston Mobile Toucan Mobile Talk Your Communications Quote:

You do seem to be the most vocal on this subject... I find Onetel perfectly fine...others may too... There calls my nolonger be the cheapest but, all I use my line for is broadband. I have never had to report a fault with my landline to either BT or Onetel. So customer service quality is not an issue. I have never had a billing issue either. I so am not bothered about caller ID either... I am also registered with telphone preference (free to everybody despite what BT neglect to promote in there adverts) |

I too have been registered with the TPS for many years, however it is nice to see who is calling before you answer the call, hence Caller Display is a good idea, all the better if you don't have to pay for it. If you have your line rental with BT, there is nothing wrong with going with OneTel for the free calls, you could use their sister company Just Dial Saver and get free evening and weekend calls for no monthly charge, then as your line rental is with BT you can use 18866 for daytime calls at 3 pence per call (not per minute). |

I understand where you are coming from, but it seems that every other post in this newly created forum is ripping onetel apart.
We might as well have a "Landlines" and "Onetel" The problem with forums is that people are quite happy to rip any company apart when they have a problem. The same people are probably less quick to compliment a company. Its a bit like the tabloid press. You never read about the Vicar who raised lots of money for his local comunity" As soon as Chris Evan drops one in public it on the front page. |

You just need to keep your line rental with BT, and then you have a choice of CPS providers offering free calls for no charge, and because your line rental is with BT you can pick and choose who to use for other calls. If your interest is only to not have BT billing you or to save only pennies when you could save several pounds then using companies like OneTel and TalkTalk for both line rental and calls would suit you fine. Most (granted not all) are interested in cutting their call costs by more than just a few pennies. This is why when I had a landline, my line rental was with BT, CPS via TalkTalk as I got free evening and weekend calls for no fee, and then used 18866 for my daytime calls, 1899 for mobile calls, however later switched to 18185 for those (currently 2p/min for weekend calls to mobiles and 5p/min weekdays), and a combination of them all depending on international destination called. I have however now dropped the normal landline completely and solely rely on VoIP, I just pay Telewest for my broadband, I pay nothing for my phone service - no monthly fee and no charge to UK landlines and landlines of several other countries. |

We might as well have a "Landlines" and "Onetel" As long as you don't have billing issues, and don't have to call CS, they aren't a problem. Unfortunately OneTel are well known for their problems. It is a shame that what was a great company with excellent CS went downhill so quickly. If you are willing to take the gamble with OneTel and use them for the free calls, I see no problem with this, and when they were offering both evening and weekend calls for free for no charge, I was recommending people take that risk. |

I'm probably there worst customer because they never see a penny other than for my line rental. I rape the free calls.
It's great being a Centrica shareholder!

www.saynoto0870.com is another useful site, save you paying rip-off call costs to 0844,0845, 0870 and 0871 numbers, as you may find the alternative real number the non-geo lands on.
Saves paying 8p/min to an 0870 number when you can call a geo 01/02 out of your free calls. |

TalkTalk
TalkTalk,Bulldog and Tele2 are all CPS services which use a BT line.
However, you now recieve one bill from the CPS company containing call charges and line rental in one. The CPS company then passes line rental onto BT every quater. Also, choose a provider that does not charge you for customer service. (Ex: Choose a company which uses a 0500,0800 or 0808 number for it's customer service and support lines and not 0845 or 0870 numbers). Oh and one last thing, BT privacy is in fact TPS under BT's branding. When a customer registers for BT privacy at home, their details are forwarded to TPS. This is BT's way of saying 'It cares for it's customers unlike other companies'. It's a fact that all providers including Telewest and NTL advise it's customers to register with the TPS. This is BT's new way of getting customers to sign up for BT instead of using it's old formular's of advertising free call schemes and discounts. So anyone not registered with TPS can register by calling 0800-398-893 using the automated service or at www.tps-online.org.uk |
